Returning Home as a Stranger
Allan Jamisen’s “Milk & Honey” is a dream pop and trip-hop song with touches of jazz. The Phoenix-based composer, singer-songwriter and visual artist wrote it after returning to the city following more than a decade in Denmark. Instead of slipping comfortably back into his old life, he found himself feeling like an outsider in the place where he grew up.
“I’m a stranger in my hometown, gone so long, there’s no right or wrong now,” Jamisen sings. He watches his old friends settle down and build lives filled with memories he doesn’t share. The lyric gets at something many people experience after living away for years. You return expecting home to feel the same, but time has moved on without you.

Even the phrase “land of milk and honey” has a slight edge to it. It suggests comfort and abundance, yet Jamisen sounds caught between his attachment to Phoenix and the knowledge that he no longer belongs there in quite the same way.
Dream Pop With Touches of Jazz
The track moves at an unhurried pace, led by atmospheric guitar, piano, electronic textures and a restrained beat. It’s not a jazz song, but the spacious arrangement and saxophone bring jazz into the mix. The saxophone solo is the undisputed highlight. It enters naturally and gives the song a burst of energy without disturbing the overall mood.
Jamisen’s low and brooding voice suits the material. He doesn’t oversell the sadness or turn the song into a dramatic homecoming story. The layered vocals simply make him sound more removed from his surroundings.
