Some songs are about falling in love. Others are about getting your heart broken. ‘Acupuncture’ by Ava Valianti lives somewhere in between, in that frustratingly familiar space where you’re trying to figure out whether a connection is real or whether you’ve simply convinced yourself that it is.
Along with her new release, the 17-year-old singer-songwriter Ava Valianti continues to explore a jazz-pop and R&B-inspired sound that feels playful, expressive, and distinctly her own. What stood out to me about ‘Acupuncture’ immediately was how naturally the music complements the song’s central idea. The warm piano grooves, syncopated rhythms, and fluid melodies mirror the narrator’s habit of overanalyzing every interaction, making the uncertainty at the heart of the song feel both believable and surprisingly fun to experience.

A Sound That Keeps You Guessing
Acupuncture’ by Ava Valianti opens with a descending bassline before easing into a bright piano groove and syncopated rhythm section. What I enjoyed most was how the arrangement mirrors the narrator’s thought process.
The song rarely sits still. The rhythms bounce around, the melodies drift in unexpected directions, and everything feels just a little unpredictable. Moreover, even though the lyrics explore emotional uncertainty, the music never sounds weighed down by it. Instead, there’s a lightness and confidence running through the track that makes it genuinely fun to listen to.
The opening line, ‘My hands hover over yours. Like I don’t want to disturb the peace,’ immediately establishes the song’s central tension. I think what makes these lyrics work so well is how specific they are. Rather than focusing on grand romantic gestures, Valianti zooms in on small interactions and the meaning we attach to them. One lyric that particularly stayed with me is, ‘My love is unguarded, deeper than what is defined, your love’s a little absent-minded, but I don’t mind.’ There’s a level of self-awareness here that I found refreshing. The narrator clearly understands that the feelings aren’t equally shared, yet chooses to stay invested anyway. Instead of turning the situation into a tragedy, she approaches it with humor and honesty.
‘Acupuncture’ is based on the idea that temporary discomfort can ultimately have a positive effect. Strangely, that’s exactly what the song captures. The narrator knows there’s a chance she’s reading too much into things. She knows pursuing this fantasy may not end well. Yet there’s something exciting about the possibility, even when it’s built on uncertainty.
Final Thoughts
What I liked most about ‘Acupuncture’ is that it doesn’t try to solve the problem it presents. There’s no dramatic revelation, heartbreak, or tidy conclusion. Instead, Ava Valianti embraces the confusion. She captures the optimism, vulnerability, and occasional irrationality that come with liking someone who may not feel the same way.
By the time the track drifts into its dreamy closing moments, it feels less like a love song and more like a snapshot of a particular state of mind. That’s what stayed with me after listening. Rather than judging the narrator for overthinking everything, the song acknowledges that sometimes people knowingly get carried away by possibility. And honestly, that’s a lot more relatable than most romance songs are willing to admit.
