‘17’ by Koizumi is an energetic rock song that uses its edge to express this loud sense of frustration. The song’s soundscape, like a typical pop-rock track with a 2000’s sound, begins quiet before its refrain explodes into loud an cathartic emotion.
The lyrics describe that narrator as they slowly come apart, showing us how after experiencing something negative, their life seems a bit lop-sided.

‘17’: Loud and Self-Deprecating
In ‘17’, our narrator seems to have gone through an experience that makes them feel alone. Things that felt regular once don’t feel right anymore, and everything that doesn’t feel right simply reinforces everything that’s wrong with them.
“…Did I make it home last night?
Felt like I was so f*cking high…
…Did I forget to lock the door?
I’ve done it right a thousand times before.
I’m a f*cking crumbing avalanche,
Decimating my only chance…”.
The lyrics on ‘17’ are snappy with biting frustration, while their mood seems dejected and almost resigned. It feels like tone colours every experience, highlighting the loneliness and isolation our narrator feels. If only they weren’t who they were, things might be better?
“…If only I wasn’t such a loser
Here in the sea of faces,
You can see past the illusion.
That I’ve been here like a phantom of a generation…”.
The loud, almost cathartic instrumentation in this refrain compliments this biting sense of dejection. “…Too bad it always ends up I’m the unrequited son of a b*tch…”.
The song’s bridge builds on this with intensity that feels a bit off-kelter with contradictions.
“…I’m a loser, I’m a creep.
I’m everything you could need.
Ooo, if only, if only, if only…
…I’ve been saying that since I was 17. (Ugh, f*ck me.)…”.
The last refrain of ‘17’ by Koizumi takes from that addendum and doubles down on the self-deprecation almost. The song seems dejected, but the final note of the track seems to change the mood in the moment. Its almost hopeful, like something changed.
