Les Arrivants bring levity and essence to their instrumental album, “Towards the Light”

Les Arrivants is the refreshing break from the Western caged music that dominates the atmosphere. No comments on it being inspiring, but it becomes predictable due to the backlogs of data available. Three musicians settled in Montréal during the pandemic and connected using music. Now, we have the exhilarating experience of listening to their music through chemistry. This is their latest album, Towards the Light.

From the scales these musicians use to the rich instrumental canvas that is prepared, there is a lot to love. This is the kind of collective that hangs out and converses later. That spark and charisma is heard in what they compose. City of Ashes is performed by the 3 with a smile across their face. It is an enjoyable groove, carrying its own aura of mystery. It perhaps is the proclivity for composing unique auras with their music that brings them together in such close quarters.

Phoenix Landing has more of a neo-jazz essence to it, from the beginning. It has the folk touch to it which cannot be denied, while exploring the depth of waters. Amichai Ben Shalev, Abdul-Wahab Kayyali, and Hamin Honari are turning towards the light, and the extent of their talent is bewildering. Les Arrivants uses their space for genuine thought, through music. As it is all instrumental, in parts it feels like commentary between instruments. I feel this is especially refreshing and symbolic-the human touch to music and associated emotion. All with the specific touch that live instrumentation brings.

Hayrah banks on the emotive nature of the track to explain its melodies. Though we have been fed Westernised versions of inspired tunes in Hollywood movies, this is the real deal. It is in how much texture and depth exists in their music, and how well they balance the art. Les Arrivants join Charles Papasoff for their next number. Apatride has patience to it, a meditative chant that develops in its own story. The band comes together like a dance troupe experiencing music together, understanding and developing the rhythm. It is an epic song, with a lot of swirling movements and changing paths. This keeps it interesting, refreshing and unlike anything you would typically hear.

Songs like Towards the Light bring some refreshing optimism and candour to the theme of the album. It is admirable, Les Arrivants creating the kind of music they do, while establishing a strong voice in world music. Piroozi dives into colourful palettes of sound, while the original line-up bring their best. From their previous album Home, the trio have made quite a footprint in their song catalogue. The album is a smashing success, the extent to which the band explores this still remains on the top of our minds.  Listen to their album here:
