Hollow Shift captures the blurring lights on a cold night as you cruise by. It’s not just this double A-side that they have presented that I am talking about. The duo have been able to capture their inspirations while having a hue of their own ink in the mix. The makers of such music as Clash and Reload, you can be assured that what you hear will be a quality mixture of thrilling dark wave/post-punk music. This one is called Electric Gloom.
As a huge fan of Robert Smith (The Cure) and Joy Division, the opening instrumental section immediately took me back to the time. From the buzzing bass to how the chord transitions, having a seamless background that becomes a flavourful mix, you’re in for a fresh kind of melancholy. Hollow Shift makes the depth of the background a gradient, while the vocals stand out with incredible character. The chorus almost instantly draws you back, a sudden glow coming around. However, the same is contrasted with the word ‘gloom’, bringing a great contrast for the aural space to consider. I loved how there is a sense of seamlessness due to the ambience not being cut by silence.

Yet, when we reach the verse, there is a hop to the track. The bass frequency cuts through, complementing the vocals. Hollow Shift carry great density in their music, making sure the composition has the balance the new wave genre always boasted. You could be in your train of thought, and something about this music crafts itself as the rails from nothing.
Tune in to a new wavelength
This is how we flow into Fire and Smoke – a track that is more like a continuation of a film than another track on this double A-side. I loved the bridge to the vocals a lot – the range and lightness shine through with the uplifting rhythm. They don’t just capture time as a duo, they’re able to filter in the emotions, pace and escape we want to feel while listening to this music. This is why it’s so cathartic to experience what they put out for us. Hollow Shift is the gear to dial into truly great music.
Electric Gloom is as much an intro to a brilliant new chapter coming our way. Packed as an opening and conclusion within the 2 songs they give us, while becoming a closer part of our lives with every listen. I was compelled to listen to Don’t Bend the Line and Thoughts of Everywhere as well. The phantom fingerprint you can experience in every track is divine; they put their true spirit into making their music. Hollow Shift hopefully has more music that gives us tones of gloom, happiness, anger and resolve through the times we live in. Explore their track here with us!
