‘Boo Boo Betty’ by singer-songwriter Liz Nash is a blues-inspired country number that describes the dreary weight of being depressed or blue and isolated. It does this with straightforward instrumentation and clear allegory.

‘Boo Boo Betty’s Blue’
The song’s percussion and guitars are the main elements in its instrumentation. The drums are insistent while the guitars loop the same melodies over and over. The lead guitar interjects to add some variety and flavour to the mix. But overall, the instruments in their loops infuse ‘Boo Boo Betty’ with an intentional dullness that communicates mind-numbing monotony.
The lyrics describe the life of a Boo Boo Betty, someone who’s blue and isolating. Has high aspirations but doesn’t have the energy to reach them. “She wants to be an actor, writer, clothing designer…” but “Boo Boo Betty’s blue.” These lines that list out Betty’s aspirations are the only time in the entire song where the song’s numbness seems to move off a little.
Boo Boo Betty seems melancholy in her isolation. “She sleepwalks through her day…One more TV show that’s her day…” Boo Boo doesn’t have the energy to be all that she aspires to be.
‘Boo Boo Betty’ by Liz Nash, uses the story of Betty to tell a universal one. It describes the dreary weight of being depressed or blue and the isolation and numbing monotony it presumably guarantees.
The song feels like a smooth listen, though it alludes to a heaviness.
