Mike Portnoy Reflects on DT Rehearsals After 14 Years – “Like no time has passed”

Hold onto your headphones, folks—Mike Portnoy is back in the drum seat with Dream Theater, and the vibes are absolutely electric! After a 14-year hiatus, he’s reunited with the band for their epic 40th-anniversary tour, and the rehearsals are sounding like a time warp. “It’s incredible how quick and seamless we have jumped right back into these songs together again after all these years… like no time has passed,” he shared on social media. With the tour kicking off on October 20 in London, excitement is soaring!

A Time Warp of Sound

For those who don’t know, Portnoy is one of the founding fathers of Dream Theater, co-creating the band back in 1985 alongside guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung. Over two decades, he drummed on ten studio albums, earning his place in the progressive metal hall of fame. After parting ways with the band in 2010, he dabbled in a variety of projects but always held a torch for Dream Theater. “I always missed Dream Theater and the music and the guys and the fans,” he reminisced in an interview with Sonar FM, a nostalgic twinkle in his eye.

The Founding Father Returns

The upcoming tour, aptly titled “An Evening With Dream Theater,” will whisk fans across Europe until November 24. And here’s the kicker: not only will fans get to hear beloved classics, but they’ll also witness a fresh take on the setlist, thanks to Portnoy’s triumphant return. “I’ve always written all the setlists for Dream Theater,” he declared, practically buzzing with enthusiasm. With a sprawling 40-year catalog to choose from, he’s got a playground of musical history at his fingertips. “I’m just as excited to play those songs as any of them,” he beamed, channeling the thrill of the road ahead.

The Magic of Studio Chemistry

But wait, there’s more! The band has also been holed up in the studio, recording their long-awaited sixteenth album. “It felt like it was only one week since we last made a record together,” Portnoy said, capturing the magic of their chemistry. With a 15-year gap since their last release, this new album promises to echo the classic Dream Theater sound that fans crave. “It definitely sounds like classic Dream Theater,” he affirmed, raising the anticipation meter to the max.

Rejoining the band isn’t without its challenges, though. “I have to kind of find my place within the band’s chemistry now,” Portnoy explained, acknowledging the shifting dynamics during his time away. He’s all about respect this time around, understanding that his bandmates have crafted their own routines over the years. “I have had to be very respectful for my role as the new guy and finding my way back into the chemistry of the band,” he noted, showcasing a newfound maturity.

Cherishing Every Moment

As the countdown to the tour’s launch begins, Portnoy reflects on the importance of cherishing their time together. “Who knows how much time we have left? The clock is ticking,” he mused, infusing a sense of urgency into their creative mission. With excitement bubbling and rehearsals sounding fresher than ever, it’s clear that this reunion is more than a nostalgic trip down memory lane—it’s a bold new chapter for Dream Theater. So, grab your tickets and get ready to rock, because this legendary band is ready to unleash their magic once again!
