Fans Eagerly Await New Album From The xx as the British Synthwave Trio Begin Dropping Hints

English rock band The XX have been dropping hints about a possible release of a new album. The indie pop/synthwave band from Wandsworth did not release an album since I See You in 2017. The members have ventured into solo projects. Romy Madley Croft has recently dropped a new single called Enjoy Your Life. The promotions for which can be seen in bandmates Jamie XX and Oliver Sim’s Instagrams.

In a 2022 interview Sim confirmed the possibility of fresh releases by The xx in the future.

“The xx will always be my home and will always be my priority,” Sim expressed. “And normally I wouldn’t speak for Romy and Jamie, but I know they feel the same. I think all of us doing our solo projects just makes me excited. It’s like, how is this gonna change the band? What have we all learned independently? And nothing is recorded at the moment, but there is more music from The xx, definitely.”

The xx XX was a critically acclaimed record in contemporary indie pop music

The band’s debut album xx was released by Young Turks in August 2009 to widespread critical acclaim. Critics particularly praised the xx’s sound on the album; The Independent wrote that they were being universally lauded for their “atmospheric indie rock, and rightly so“. The Daily Telegraph’s regarded xx as “one of this year’s most beautiful and original debut albums“. Reviewing for The New Yorker remarked that the album rewards repeated listens because of the band’s disciplined playing, while The Sunday Times said it succeeds with simple but “very near perfect” pop songs.

xx was not an immediate chart success, but eventually became a sleeper hit. It debuted at number 36 on the UK’s Official Albums Chart and sold 4,180 copies in the first week after it was released, while in the United States it did not chart higher than number 92 on the Billboard 200. The album sold steadily for the next 44 weeks until July 2010, when it experienced a sharp increase in sales and a jump from number 44 to 16 on the British chart following its announcement as a nominee for the Mercury Prize, an annual award given to the best album from the UK and Ireland.

Fans can not keep calm

For the 10th anniversary of their second album, Coexist, The xx released a vinyl reissue. The edition released on January 2023, which is now available online, contains live versions of “Angels,” “Chained,” “Reunion,” and “Sunset,”

The members of the xx have independently pursued solo projects since 2018. Those independent projects include Jamie xx’s remix album feat. Gil Scott-Heron, We’re New Here, his solo venture In Colour, Romy’s debut solo single, “Lifetime,” and Oliver’s solo debut Hideous Bastard, which Sim released in 2022.

As Romy shared a picture with Oliver Sim on her IG, fans of The xx erupted with joy at the possibility of a new record. “This photo makes me miss the xx even more,” wrote one fan. “Happy y’all are pursuing solo projects but New xx album pls,” added another. While some fans also took the opportunity to express their disbeliefs saying, “I will never understand why after the massive success of the XX you guys don’t want to do it anymore”

In other news, Jamie xx will be playing a solo set at BBC radio1 ‘s Big Weekend in Dundee, on Friday, May 26.
