Ernie Ball Acquires Source Audio to Expand Into Premium Guitar Effects Pedals

Ernie Ball has acquired Source Audio, marking its first major expansion into the premium guitar effects pedal market. The deal brings one of the industry’s most innovative effects manufacturers under the Ernie Ball umbrella while allowing Source Audio to continue operating as an independent brand.

Founded in 2006, Source Audio has built a strong reputation for producing advanced drive, delay, reverb, modulation, and other effects pedals. The company has received multiple product and innovation awards over the years, and its pedals have been used on recordings by artists including U2, David Gilmour, John Mayer, and Aerosmith.

The acquisition significantly broadens Ernie Ball’s product portfolio beyond its established range of strings and volume pedals. The company plans to use its global reach and distribution network to increase Source Audio’s visibility and make its products available to more musicians.

Brian Ball, CEO of Ernie Ball, highlighted the creative potential behind the acquisition. “Ernie Ball has always existed to help artists create, and Source Audio gives us a powerful new way to do exactly that.”

The move could reshape competition in the premium effects segment. With Ernie Ball’s backing, Source Audio is expected to strengthen its market presence, potentially increasing competition for established effects brands such as Strymon, Eventide, and Keeley.

Despite the ownership change, Source Audio will continue to operate under its existing brand identity. Current products will remain available, while future pedal development is expected to continue with the additional resources and support provided by Ernie Ball. The acquisition is focused on expanding Source Audio’s reach rather than introducing a new line of Ernie Ball-branded effects pedals.

Source Audio CEO and co-founder Roger Smith said Ernie Ball’s understanding of musicians and guitar culture made it the right long-term partner, adding that the acquisition would provide the scale and support needed for continued growth while preserving the company’s identity, technology, products, and community.
