We recently interviewed the extremely talented The Burbs on the release of their latest track ‘There’s No Time For Presents’, and this is what they have to say!
1. Could you walk us through the creative process for this song?
It was a pretty easy track to put together, but we wanted the right feeling, so we put a bunch of energy into making the bass and drum parts sound fresh. If you have a good listen to the rhythm section, especially in the choruses, you’ll probably get it.
2. What was the first image or moment that sparked the creation of this track?
A phone call with a friend.
3. How does the songwriting dynamic work – do lyrics lead the way, or does the music pull them out?
We always do music first. I don’t even understand how it works the other way around.
4. How are you hoping that the audience is going to perceive this song?
If you’ve ever been through a time where you’ve wondered if there was more you could’ve done to help someone, then we hope this track provides some sort of comfort in the sense that at least you can feel like you’re not alone in those feelings.
5. How does your musical personality show up in the final arrangement of the song?
We’re all about bold melodies. We thought this track had a good one, and we chose to reinforce it by having the guitar solo repeat the melody of the chorus.
6. What’s one moment during the recording of this track that you will never forget?
Our video guy, Loic, had six chicken and cheese burgers, then tried a backflip and shaved his head one inch from the ground on the way through.

7. Do you see the song as a catharsis? Or more of a tribute to a past that shaped you, mess and all?
More of a tribute. A letter to a friend really.
8. How would you describe “There’s No Time For Presents” to someone who is listening for the first time?
It’s like being a Macaw in a bird cage, and your owner doesn’t know what food you eat.
9. “There’s No Time For Presents” is such an evocative title – how do you personally interpret that phrase?
It felt kinda awkward putting such a dark and personal song out into the world, so we wanted to play it down by giving it a dumb title. It’s just a silly play on words.
