President Street’s reimagining of Fine Young Hannibal’s hit song “She Drives Me Crazy” is a true masterpiece of music. As I pressed play on the track, I was transported back in time to the golden era of 2000s music. The beats were amazing, bringing back fond memories of the time when music was all about rhythm and groove. But as the song progressed, I realized that it had a freshness to it that was unlike anything I had heard before. The easy breezy vibe of the song was simply infectious. It was as if the music had taken on a life of its own and was determined to fill every corner of the room with its joyous energy. President Street’s rendition of “She Drives Me Crazy” was truly a standout performance that captured the essence of the original while giving it a fresh and modern twist.
The vocal performance was absolutely breathtaking and flawlessly intertwined with the captivating rhythm of the song. It was a true testament to the band’s exceptional artistry and their ability to breathe new life into a beloved favorite. But what really stood out to me was the perfectly crafted production that set the stage for the magic to unfold. From the smooth transition between the verses and the chorus to the expertly placed instrumentals, every facet of this record was truly stellar.
In fact, I would go so far as to say that this song is a must-listen for anyone who appreciates exceptional artistry and a fresh perspective on the classics. It’s a beautiful reminder that even the most timeless songs can be reimagined and given a new lease of life in the hands of talented artists like President Street.
We had an opportunity to interview President Street about this incredible new release and beyond. Keep reading to know more.
1. Hey President Street! Welcome! Your latest single “She Drives Me Crazy” is an absolute banger! It’s both familiar and fresh, with a unique sound that’s sure to get people dancing. What inspired you to put your own spin on this classic track?
A: Hey! Thank you so much for having us! So happy you’re loving the new track! We definitely wanted to do a modern fresh summer take on such an amazing classic! It was a bit of a stab in the dark actually. We’d been told by people around us for a while to try out a cover song and when Pete came across the ‘Fine Young Cannibals’ (FYC) original of it he thought it was a great idea and Ruby agreed!!
We both felt the Australian-British connection worked too since we’re both Australian and the original FYC song was a number 1 hit in Australia in 1989 and is a well known and much loved classic here. Then, the fact that our second home has become the U.K. from all the time we’ve spent touring and working over there, we felt it was a nice connection since the FYC are British. So paying hommage to a band and song with both British and Australian ties felt right!
2. Can you give us a sneak peek into your creative process and share some insights into how you managed to take the original track and elevate it to a whole new level of awesomeness?
A: It was a team effort! We started building up a demo version of ‘She Drives Me Crazy’ last year around September in England. Firstly, we played around with the tempo and sped it up – then added in the extra beats, bass and synth lines as well as Pete playing Acoustic guitar and tricking it up to make it sound electric. We also had a great guy and guitarist from England, Rob Webb, play some electric guitar too. We then emailed it over to one of our favourite producers who we’ve worked with previously on a few songs of ours, Ash Howes (Kylie Minogue, 5SOS, One Direction, Ellie Goulding). He got back to us in lightning speed saying he loved it and that since we were in England where he’s based too, that we should come to his studio and record the vocals and work on it together. Ash worked on it a bit in the meantime and we were so excited with what he added (he has the magic touch!) and couldn’t wait to get in his studio to finish it.
It all happened pretty quickly – we were actually in the studio with Ash on the release day of our previous single ‘Tell Me Brother’ last October 2022! It was great to finally meet him in person for the first time and record the vocals in studio and play around with some sounds together. Ash did his work on it afterwards and then a few days later we spent a day with a few emails of the track back and forth between us fine tuning it and we had it locked down by the end of that same day!
3. What do you hope fans of the original song take away from your version?
A: We guess we’d hope our version brings back happy nostalgic memories and of course we hope they don’t feel we’ve butchered the original haha! We hope they can listen to ours and feel the light, happy, summery party vibe of it that lifts their mood, you know? We visualise summer day drives, disco nights with friends, sweaty workouts and just having a happy dance to our more pop dance version.
4. What advice do you have for up-and-coming artists trying to put their own spin on classic songs?
A: We’d never want to influence any other artists’ true creative process while making any song so it’s just to do it as they feel while paying homage to the original – which we believe is always the natural thing any artist would have in mind anyway!
5. As you continue to gain more international recognition, what do you hope to achieve as artists and what are your goals for the future of President Street?
A: We hope to do more live shows, to grow in our following and continue meeting and staying connected with the amazing people who support us!
We’re aiming to have a mini album out soon too.
As artists we really hope that our music connects with people and that our fans stay with us on our journey. We love what we do and feel so blessed to be able to do it!
And then there are always a few things we like to keep close to our chests 🙂
6. Any exciting projects in the pipeline you would like to talk about?
A: We’re excited to share our upcoming music video for ‘She Drives Me Crazy’ very soon so stay tuned for that and we’d love to know what you think of it!
After that you’ll just have to wait and see!! 🙂
