‘First Light’ by Sun Deep is an Indian Indie-Pop Track that Pairs Visuals with Soundscape to Deliver a Mesmerising Experience (Interview)

First Light’ by Sun Deep is a mellow Indian indie-pop track that uses mesmerising visuals to allow that track to become brighter and more immersive. The song uses its lyrics to tackle one’s identity in love, exploring the encompassing nature of that deep emotion in its lines.

The track’s soundscape is minimal and calm, while the mellow vocal lilts through the track. This flow communicates this sense of transience that wraps around you slowly, allowing the listener to simply sink into this sonic narrative.

‘First Light’ captures life before and after love in lyrics. The lyrics are written with this sense of poetic flair, beginning with this sense of longing that remains throughout. This mood only takes on subtle shifts from longing that feels lonely, to longing that feels strangely whole.

Our narrator’s lover is his “…jaan…” which when translated can mean either love or life. Its like this person who “…came into my life as the first light…”, brought life and love to it. A life that “…feels empty without you here…”, becomes more.

Though ending on a note that feels whole, ‘First Light’ by Sun Deep isn’t fully satisfied. There are moments where there is this sense that the narrator wants more in some ways. Though there is clarity, there is want for passion.

“…I have some clarity now, but passion feels faint…”.

But there’s always this sense of wholeness and completeness. That the two lovers will get through life together and are committed to one another.

“…Mera waqt tu…meri jaan tu…”.

“…You are my time…you are my love/life…” (trans.).

About ‘First Light’

The Song

1. Congratulations on the release of ‘First Light’! How does it feel now that the song and visual is out there for the world to experience?

It feels really good to share the art with the world! I am thankful for the reception and looking forward to sharing more work.

2. Could you tell us a bit about what inspired the song?

The song is part of an album I am working on called “Waqt”. The idea behind the album is having conversations with my subconscious. The songs have a similar theme of “time” in one aspect or another. The inspiration of this song was a conversation with my subconscious as to what is true meaning of love and the emptiness one feels in the absence of it. Once you find someone you truly appreciate, moments pass you by without notice but when they are not around you, every second feels like an eternity.

The Music Video

3. The music video feels like it perfectly complements the song’s mood. Why did it feel right to tell the song’s story this way?

I have been hugely influenced by films and film soundtracks. I feel like I make music that is very emotional at its core and requires a visual media to truly shine in its entirety. When I write a song, the visuals automatically come into my mind and the themes and ideas just keep getting stronger as time goes on. I wanted to make a one-take music video because I wanted to capture the essence of the song and the idea of the linearity of time.

Planning

4. How do you approach making a song and planning its visuals? Could you describe your process for us?

I usually have creative bursts that I ride when I am making something creative. I work as a Geophysicist as my day job and I make music at night. Sometimes life moves in ways that creativity is hard to harness but I cherish moments when it shines through me. I will usually sit with a sample or a synth and start playing around with it, trying to inject it with the emotions I am feeling as I am writing it or something that I am thinking about or something that is troubling me. Once I have a scratch beat I will start writing lyrics to it. Usually a musical piece’s emotion will dictate what feelings I put into my lyrics. It comes very naturally and then I keep tweaking it once I think I have the final product. As I mentioned before, shot ideas and the visual vibe of the songs already started playing in my head as I am writing the lyrics and laying down the vocals. I just feel that my music has to be seen as a complete package with my music, lyrics and visuals. I am basically creating short films to accompany my music.

About Sun Deep

5. How did you get your start as an artist?

I started in 2019 with a midi keyboard and ableton. I am not trained in any instruments or music theory. I just picked it up once I truly got into hiphop when I watched “The Roots” live with my wife. Before that, I never really got into Hip-Hop because coming from a small town in India, somehow the subject matter never spoke to me. Once I found underground hiphop like The Roots, MF DOOM, Aesop Rock and many more, I started enjoying hiphop and the story telling aspect of it. So I wanted to do it myself and I started learning how to produce music. I made beats for other artists in Oklahoma where I started, but then slowly started adding my own vocals because I felt the only person who can truly bring out the potential of my music is me. As I said, I was slowly moving towards music being a complete package where I produce, write and capture visuals the way I see them.

6. How has your art informed your relationship with the cultures that surround you?

Very interesting question. I think art has definitely helped me reach people locally and share my culture with them while they share theirs with me. Also, on the flip side, the culture that surrounds me also informs my art on a very large scale. I am someone who is very much interested in understanding cultural traumas and figuring out my own mental health and that is what my music is about as well.

Message for Listener & Aspiring Artists

7. Do you have a message for your listeners?

I would just like to thank each and every one that has listened/shared/appreciated my music. I still feel like I am just getting started. I am starting to experiment with different sounds and genres as I get more comfortable in my skin and also as an artist. So look out for some music that you may have never heard before or combinations of instruments that you thought would never go together.

8. Is there anything else you would like to share? A message for aspiring artists on a similar artistic journey as you?

I would say just go for what you love. Rome was not built in a day. You have to have patience in being an artist but that is the most fun part of it. You find something new every day and you learn something new everyday that you can apply to your art. It is a fascinating thing to create something that is uniquely yours and at the same time, showcases a glimpse of every artist you love and look up to. Just go out there and create something. It will be yours because no one else did it but you
