Paul Bibbins takes a classic rock turn back to the 70s with his EP, “Disenchantment at a Distance”

Paul Bibbins has some really great chops to enjoy. This musician has a tone and style that is worth exploring for the kind of mix he brings. A bit Hendrix, a bit of funk and soul, there is a lot to see with each song. There is no way he isn’t a Hendrix fan, with those kinds of licks and riffs to sift through. This is his latest EP, Disenchantment at a Distance.

This is his debut, so understandably, he’s pulled out the big guns. From the guitar tone to the stylish groove he lays down, you’re addicted to Paul Bibbins in the minute. Bold, Beautiful… and Long Gone! is his opening single. That is where you feel the guitar drip, the way he can sing and mould around the core melody. Paul is a talented songwriter, he is making renaissance with contemporary elements. Not many can pull that off with this level of swagger. The solos will show you blues and hard rock aficionados will definitely pick up their guitar. Stank face? You bet there are moments of that all over the first song itself.

A bluesy walk to the front of the line

Another element that stands out is how he makes everything sound organic. It just all falls together naturally. Thrill Walk showcases that in the best form ever. The way he tailors the riff is easily the centre matrix within which the song unravels. This is just a man and his guitar, especially the whole song being a blues masterclass. From the tones that he has engineered specially to dancing across the fretboard, you have addiction served on a mirror with a credit card here. One sniff, and there’s no going back.

The title track comes next. There is no surprise why this would be the title. It has all the elements of his idiosyncratic styles. The riffs and vocals are just a backdrop to his LSD infused surreal lyrics. The imagination is wild, underrated, and definitely a signature of Paul Bibbins. Let me see you survive a conversation with him without any inspiration drawn. I call it now, impossible. The way he changes his approach on solos when he’s changed the distortion and style is impressive. You’ll find this nurturing cloud of a fuzz blanket ringing around you even when the song is over. Genius packaged in each and every solo, ready to tell people tales.

Vista Valley Drift closes out the album, but not without his dapper style showing through once again. His raw approach to recording and making it seem like a live performance is something I’ll always be in awe of. This musician is turning the pages of the blues songwriting masterclass with fury, and adding some embellishments to the existing elements. Self professed metalhead, moderately well read. If the music has soul, it's whole to me. The fact that my bio could have ended on a rhyme and doesn't should tell you a lot about my personality.
