Music that AI wouldn’t have the gore guts to make-Our Bones. Is there a bit of creative direction borrowing from their name? Sure. I was just awestruck at how well they’ve placed their album, their first in 8 years. A LOT has changed in 8 years. So have they. This one is called cash considerations. Deeper connotations? Don’t care.
The band from Hudson Valley, NY make a passionate return to releasing music. The opening of the song is almost like a reminiscing, called no home. Gentle, with arpeggiated guitar elements, vocals shine through telling a story. When ambient chord progressions harmonise, you’ll feel goosebumps, making you float through the song. The first half of the song builds gently, with a specific focus on the lyrics and the tones that they’ve used. As distortion fills the silence, the intensity can be felt in every cell of your body. What a return.
Where do they take us?
We continue the journey with what is wrong? A reflective song, this is executed in lower registers with distorted, felted keys. If you really turn up the volume, you can hear the amount of detail they have furnished into every single song. Another emotive song, the alt-rock band swells to a powerful peak and then recedes back into an acoustic reverie. Then come the unique melodies of don’t get it. Almost a Middle-Eastern melodic cue is the entry, shuffling through different tones again.

Our Bones have taken an incredibly nuanced approach in this album. When in some places you’d box them to be in a typical indie rock sphere, they break out to experiment with either the lyrical lanes or instrumental detail. I liked how they transitioned to all the time, a feel good styled rock number. Chord progressions to how the layers stack up, the songs generate enough power and fumes to turn into the next tricks for the next song.
When emotions write the song
As I moved on to dead bird, I realised how long I’ve been in the cocoon of their melodic experience. Our Bones have kept a lot of dexterous melodies swirling in between what seem to be simple chord progressions. A Beatle-sque aesthetic is exuded from this number, as it builds to something fantastic. I don’t say this about many albums, but they took their time for a reason with this one. It’s damn near perfect-in expressing flaws, vulnerabilities and energies through their only outlet to the world.
As I listened to winning and practice for today-I notice the pattern across the whole album. It’s the dynamic range through which they allow the song-or rather shape it that I observe the band to do. We don’t know anything about the band, but they now vibrate through our bones. As I feel melancholy, mirroring the band with sick, sad & insane, I feel like I’ve observed them through a peephole facing me. You’re right where you belong when you listen to cash considerations.
