‘Vagus’ is David Lale’s debut as an artist. Building upon his years of extensive experience as a cellist and musician, this is his foray into a deeply personal music journey. After performing at hundreds of concerts and working on recording projects for TV and film, ‘Vagus’ is Lale’s first time “writing with no agenda”, as he puts it. Just music for music’s sake.
Split into three parts, the piece is about twenty minutes of skillful, expert instrumentation and composition. Lale leverages this expertise to tap into an emotional core. ‘Vagus’ becomes both, ambient and internal, personal and universal. Lale takes rhythms from inside the human body and turns them into the rhythm of the universe. The title is inspired by this. Specifically, the hum of the vagus nerve.

‘Vagus I’
The first track of the set, the song starts immediately with a humming, high energy synth. This is the longest piece of the set at 11 minutes. Lale adds slow, drawling cello atop the synth. The sound is haunting at first, then it feels like a tussle for dominance, with the cello slowly rising. The track plays expertly with the cello and the buzzing synth, creating pulsing, moving tension.
‘Vagus II’
The second and shortest song in the set, ‘Vagus II’ begins slow. It has a deeper, haunting sound, which remains even after the track is joined by a fast paced beat. Lale’s expertise in making music for film really shines through in the ambience of this piece.

‘Vagus III’
The closing track of the set opens with slow, luxurious cello. It ramps up in speed and pitch as it goes on, and is backed by pieces of gentle, chiming synth. There is a fragility to this piece, and a sense of emotional closure as it slowly tapers to an end.
‘Vagus’ is a promising first for Lale, and the expertise and artistic sincerity displayed elevate the tracks to a whole other realm. One that the listener wants to keep going back to.
