“Tankespinder EP”, by Tankespinder: Rock, brought together by a love of fuzzy distortion

Tankespinder are an outfit formed during the worldwide pandemic three years ago, and are brought together by their mutual love of fuzzy guitars, and their fascination with the style of music that they have since incorporated into their own, unique sound. Keep reading for my thoughts on their eponymous EP, “Tankespinder EP”!

The first track, En Forfærdelig Løgn, is a fun, uptempo intro to the EP, that manages to still retain dark undertones, especially in the vocals, where this emotion manifests as a little bit of a dallying with horror and darker themes; and this is complemented rather well by the guitars in the background, and the fast percussion that you keep up with right through the whole song. The song is also marked by slightly milder-sounding acoustic parts that drive home the variedness that this song presents, and what it means for the rest of the album.

While the first track does a fine job laying down the foundation for the Tankespinder EP, the second track, “Dying Star”, takes this forward, and cranks it up to 11– with a lot of backbeat drumming happening right from the get go to switch up the rhythms a little bit, until the various layers open up in the mix; the characteristic darker vocals remaining a carryover from the first track– at this point, I’m convinced that this is here to stay for the rest of the album as well, leaving me slightly happier, a sucker for this kind of style.

“Don’t Stroll And Scroll” evolves us further into the album, with the hard-panned clean guitar riffage making quite a splash on this song; with its steady one-two beat layered with the vocal layers making for quite the atmosphere through this song; the kind that I imagine is played as soundtrack to a series of cinematic psychedelic shots, tracing the hopped emotions of the human mind.

Some other special mentions off the Tankespinder EP include the title, “Tankespinder”, a bit more back-to-alternative-metal-roots than the other songs in the lineup, however on this song, the gentle acoustic and clean electric interludes, if you may call it those, exist, to balance out the energy dynamic and the listener’s mind, by consequence, a little. As we close out the album with Søvnløse Tanker, we’re left at the precipice of a journey of more music to come from the Tankespinder kitchen, a thoroughly refreshing experience overall.
