‘Gemspit Exquisite’ by Showtime Ramon & ProjectPorter is a Hip-Hop EP that Captures Ambition, Determination & Promise

Gemspit Exquisite’ by Showtime Ramon & ProjectPorter is an 8-track hip-hop EP that takes on ambition and the ascent towards success. The flow keeps pace with the mellow soundscape, which is infused with elements of rock, allowing our narrator to move through expansive emotions more fully.

The theme through the EP is consistent, taking on ambition and aspiration from the perspective of someone who’s reached a steep milestone. It’s simultaneously a pat on the back and a promise to strive to greater heights.

‘Gemspit Exquisite’: Track-by-Track

‘Gemspit Exquisite’: ‘Splatterbrain’- ‘Benji Wilson’

We begin with ‘Splatterbrain’, where we find our narrator perched at their milestone. It introduces the sense of bravado that’ll be present through the EP, while giving us a sense of who we’re dealing with.

‘…Started with nothing, now my verses are supercharged…

…I’m filling up pavilions, focus on millions…(a) rap superstar….”.

‘Tiger Woods’ is a track filled with distilled ambition, almost courting challengers and acknowledging competition. The beats on the track are a bit darker, introducing pianos & strings to give the rhythms a bit more oomph and gravitas.

“…Step up to the T like Tiger Woods with a long iron…”.

‘Finish Line’ is a bit more percussion heavy and feels like a build in pace. But there’s also this sense of a simple build that’s slowing down. This as we approach the EP’s emotional center, but doesn’t quite let-up on its bravado and darkness.

“…I ain’t looking back…

…Need for space…I’m in first place…”.

‘Benji Wilson’ serves as the emotional epicentre of the EP as it eulogises both an 80’s high school basketball star and the rapper’s best friend who were both gunned down in similar ways. Gone too soon. The build in the beat is more consistent, constant, and even fades out at the same rate and consistency.

It’s a heartfelt dedication that feels like a call back to the narrator’s roots in a way.

Artist’s Note on ‘Benji Wilson’

“My backstory for (the) song ‘Benji Wilson’ was inspired by the 80’s high school basketball star and number 1 player in the nation who was shot and killed like my best friend Staxx. Both were taken too soon and never got to fulfil their potential. When Stan was alive he was a better rapper than me and actually taught me how to rap so there is no telling where he could have been in the game today.”

‘Gemspit Exquisite’: ‘Game Changer’- ‘Angle Lock’

‘Game Changer’ is a track that takes on a sense of rootedness that compliments the EP’s overall bravado. It’s also the first time we’re introduced to the rapper’s ‘Gemspitter’ persona. A “…trail-blazer…”, a “…game changer…”.

‘Blue Magic Mcgrady’ slightly scales back on the bravado that’s been established, allowing the ‘Gemspitter’ space to expand on their insecurities. “…I flow the quickest but my lyrics are messy…I got lazy demeanor…”, and so on. This tone is complimented with horns that give the track a darker tone.

‘Swanton Bomb’ brings back the bravado with this sense of drive that feels one track away from being fully earned. It reiterates the narrator’s place in the game, and feels like a restart. Almost like a push to the finish.

“…Everything I spit fucking flame….

…I’m a game changer…

…Polarising…

…Ain’t nobody I started with at the finish line…”.

The final track on the EP ‘Angle Lock’ is a promise pulled with determination. After some introspection, our narrator seems ready to take on the rap game. Their more determined, stronger and seemingly ready to take on anything.

“…I’m getting better…

…Almost to the top…

…My vision different…

…I’m in the game with all the tools…”.

The song ends with that promise before fading out.

“…Got the rap game by the ankle…

…Angle lock that sh*t…”.
