Paul Nourigat’s ‘Curious Directions’ : A Classic Rock Excellence

Paul Nourigat is a singer-songwriter and classic rock artist. He has a contemplative style, his songs made up of simmering thoughts and emotions, a space for ideas and worldviews to take shape. He offers these moments to us, weaving them into tracks that we can journey with and think with. His latest release is the ‘Curious Directions’ album, a collection that so aptly showcases the essence of his style and the pleasure of his presence. It is fresh, crisp with a whole lot of reflection and perspective. Drawing from a classic rock style, it nicely extends into soul flavors, emerging as a landscape of feelings that has their own sense of expression to them.

The collection opens with the title track. It has a feel-good and luminous sound that you nod along to as he sings about all the different moments that consciously and unconsciously shape who you are. With ‘Sliding Side by Side’, the artist tells us how he winged it with life, moments of youth slowly turned into understanding and self-exploration. The song is made with simmering blues and a mellow, rolled-out groove.

These blues are flavored with a country style and charisma in the next song, ‘Tunes in My Mind’. Classic rock seamlessly uniting with old country goodness. With delightful metaphors, he advises the listener on how to come into himself and settle into it as an adult. The things that you should value and carry with you. ‘Souls are Singing’ is a crisp folk rock song that is buoyant and full of that morning joy. It’s happy and fresh as the artist feels connected with his day, with his home and his town. The leisure just leaks out of the song and it’s the best thing ever.

The blues make a moody comeback with ‘They’re Counting on You’. ‘Pleasant Bruises’ slides into a classic rock goodness. It is dark and solemnly contemplative. The beat and the mood picks up with ‘Takes Guts to Change’, ‘The Dark Side’, and ‘Edges of the Soul’.

‘Sipping From the Same Cup’ is a feel-good country song, a song about love and that infinite connection that it comes with. With ‘Imagined Places’ adds to it. With thoughtful lyrics and a thinking vocal style, it draws us into sweet spaces. The album ends with ‘New Boulevards’, a happy and dynamic folk inspired pop rock song. A song that has that sweet pain of a great ending as the artist drives the journey to a conclusion. Having split his life, music, and experiences on the page, it feels like you’re listening to a friend singing and saying goodbye.

The album is sort of an autobiography, immortalising moments of growing, understanding, maturing, healing. The artist looks back at his journey, and sings about the paths he took, the lessons he learnt, the things he’s seen and felt. It is a reminiscing. You’ll see flashes of nostalgia, youth, regret, wisdom, melancholy, memories, joy, and acceptance. A life lived. Listen Now!

The album is available for streaming on popular sites like Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Amazon Music!
