Mikhail Daken has been blending indie rock, post-rock, ambient, dark, and dream pop. I had reviewed his earlier track ‘Fable’ and was deeply impressed then. With this song, we get him at his dark, atmospheric alternative rock heaviness. Producer George Lever manages to craft a magical piece of music, aided with performances by drummer Nik Hughes and bassist Corey Britz of English rock band Bush.
A dark gothic mood is set, with alternative rock rooted in heavy guitars. I especially loved the punchy drums and guitars are balanced enough with the other ambient soundscape elements. When I started the video, I was impressed from the very first instant. The cinematic music video is exquisitely crafted, featuring marionettes, dark creatures, and modern gothic imagery. It conveys the sense of the song’s themes and flashes of internal human darkness. It will remind you of the visual aesthetic of movies by David Lynch and the Brothers Quay.
The sound here feels like a modern alt-rock version of Steven Wilson and Karnivool. So, go spin this mesmerizing track and video. Mikhail Daken is actually crafting some stellar work. Do not give this a miss!
