Jonny Corralitos, born Jon Abrams, a California songwriter, has one of those origin stories that sounds out of movie: growing up in a teepee in Corralitos, hanging with hippies and peacocks, skipping school to surf and strum his guitar. He eventually fronted The Square Roots, a genre-bending ska-rock outfit that shared stages with the likes of No Doubt, The Wailers, Fishbone, and Santana. Now, with his solo project, Jonny Corralitos taps into those wild roots with something older, wiser, and just as catchy.

His new single ‘Over Before It’s Begun‘, from his latest EP ‘World of Sound’, is a clean-cut rock song that hits all the right notes. There’s a crisp guitar riff coupled with acoustic guitar rhythm that pairs perfectly with a pulsing bassline, giving the track a strong backbone. The drums are snappy and simple in the best way, none of that overproduced nonsense, just real rhythm that feels alive.
Vocally, Jonny Corralitos keeps things cool and understated, with hushed tones and layered harmonies that build into a gentle emotional pull. Think early 2000s pop punk and post grunge all grown up, somewhere between Matchbox Twenty and Fountains of Wayne, but with more restraint. You can hear the years and the miles in every word.
