“I Won’t Listen”, by Coma Beach: A fun rock EP!

Drawing from a diverse array of influences spanning Sex Pistols to Bad Religion, Coma Beach’s music takes on a variety of avatars to suit the mood, and to suit the groove; and they pride themselves on being the kind to delve into themes that many shy away from– and on their latest 4-piece EP, “I Won’t Listen”, they pull it off– keep reading for my thoughts!

The opener to the EP, “I Won’t Listen”, is the title track; and sounding like a fiesta of various genres like punk, pop and blues, Coma Beach nail the balance between the energetic electrics in the solo, and the very Ramones sound that charms you throughout the whole song. There is also much to appreciate about the accompaniment here, that retains its cadence and fervour, bringing to the listener a rather enjoyable listen.

Segueing into the second track, “The Past Of The Future”, this track retains all the good bits of the first, and then adds some more on top for extra effect — with a twang of punk rock and some gruff vocals to boot, this track doesn’t take long before you’re head banging to it, and when the solo announces itself, it’s madness; with the screaming electrics atop the rhythm and the drumming, this track takes the energy high up, and keeps it there for anybody who listens, to enjoy.

The third track on “I Won’t Listen”, “Passion”, takes a bit of a turn into more mellow land, with a soulful clean electric riff at the outset that soundtracks the singing and the bass-playing perfectly. The emotive impact this song creates is a standout on this track, with a mellow, heartfelt energy that pervades through the whole of this track– and when the energy starts building up, the solo weeps gently, bringing the track back full circle. The EP is wrapped up with “Another Song” (if you will pardon the pun), and encompasses the theme of the EP perfectly.

The production on this album embraces its loud, confident punk rock sound and blends it with some classic rock elements, making for an entertaining listen through and through. The mix is also tight and balanced, and remains cohesive throughout “I Won’t Listen”, making for an enjoyable listen for even the discerning. Check out “I Won’t Listen” by Coma Beach here!
