Song Atmosphere
‘Hurt’ begins with a cautious ticking sound which quickly flows into a steady beat. The song is one that anyone would want to dance to, and the production is just the right combination of varied and consistent. The beat is infectious, as is the singing. ‘Hurt’ turns into an earworm before you realize it! Young focuses on the emotionality of music, and this focus seeps through in the deliberate arrangement of sounds, which remain upbeat and dance-y.

The Lyrics
The lyrics too are upbeat. The chorus, which is reminiscent of a supportive friend, who appears like a shoulder to cry on when you need it the most, goes – “Let it out, let cry it all out to me. When you’re down, when your heart stops beatin’, you, you got me. You always got me.”
The lyrics promise the listener that they will never never be alone. That all of their bad dreams will be chased away, that they’ve always got this. As reminiscent as it is of those in our lives who are our support system, it is also the relationship most of us have with music. That music will always be there to turn to, regardless of what else is and isn’t working out in life. “You always got me”. Can be read as this promise that the listener receives from their favourite artist, favourite album, from music itself. For as long as they give in to it, and allow it to move them, they will never be alone.
