‘HIGH NOON’ by Rayhan is a Chill Hip-Hop Album with a Groove with Something to Prove

HIGH NOON’ by Rayhan is a 6-track chill hip-hop album that seems to groove through our narrator’s comeback story. Its soundscape plays with mood and tempo, making a statement grounded in rhythm and a smooth flow.

Each track moves from something sure to a mood that’s a bit off-kelter. It feels like we go through most of our narrator’s journey in just a few minutes. Experiencing his highs and lows and trials in love & work almost in real time.

‘HIGH NOON’: Track-by-Track

‘HIGH NOON’ (1): ‘FOREVER SOLID INTRO’- ‘Good Looking Rapper’

The album begins with the chill vibe of ‘FOREVER SOLID INTRO’, a track that captures every emotion we’re going to experience through the album. Our narrator’s flow is smooth on the track, speeding up to capture intense bursts of emotion, and stretches out to create some distance.

The song sets the tone for the album, with chill beats that feel consistent.

‘Evil Spirits, Pure Heart’ follows this chill beat precedent with an off-kelter flow that almost swings. Percussive beats drag and double while our narrator seems to pull himself from the rubble, with rap that feels fast-paced and almost unhinged.

We’re treated to our narrator’s gaul, his unapologetic ambition that seems to fuel his drive and resolve. “…I went to Hell and told the Devil to get some new decor…”.

The music video for the same compliments the song’s flow, with well-paced cuts and unsettling close-ups that really feed onto the song’s energy.

The beat on the next song, ‘Good Looking Rapper’ still seems to drag, much like the previous song before the rhythm begins to pick up. This trap rhythm contains this tremulous sense of energy, a momentum that begins to build with red-hot tension before cooling down again.

The lyrics find our narrator in this defensive mode almost, bursting with something to prove.

“…I’m a good lookin’ rapper, I ain’t trying to stunt…I ain’t trying to front…”.

‘HIGH NOON’ (2): ‘HIGH NOON CRY’- ‘FLY LITTLE RAY OUTRO’

‘HIGH NOON CRAY’ is a rhythmic interlude that builds with a hard beat under a deliberately slow rap-flow. The beat seems to cascade while the lyrics finally burst from these seemingly restrictive confines.

The song ends with the lines, “…No one ever lets me breathe…”.

‘Universe of Love’ is a love song that’s a bit rough on the edges, this while expressing a unique kind of love. Our narrator wax’s poetic about his lover’s body, falling hard and pretty much obsessed with her. The rap brings back a bit of that off-kelter, bursting feeling in this expression.

“…Can I hold your hand and take you out?…

…You’re my greatest verse, Imma lay it down.

You my universe, (you) keep me on the ground…”.

This is followed by the final song on the album, ‘FLY LITTLE RAY OUTRO’ is a reflective track, that attempts to condense these experiences down while moving past them. Our narrator’s speaking to their child-self telling him everything we just heard, while reassuring himself that things get better.

“…Fly little Ray-I promise nothing sweeter…

…It’s a mysterious life man, full of suspense…”.

‘HIGH NOON’ by Rayhan captures emotions with a versatile flow and a chill beat with a malleable soundscape. Its equal parts empowering as it is unsettling, making for an engaging listen.
