Uncanny’ by singer-songwriter Holly Havens is a 4-track folk-rock EP that delves into the familiar but with an unsettling eeriness. The soundscape uses deliberately slow guitars that veer to on the edge of rock, while the lyrics dive deep into emotions that can stir your emotions at their core.

‘Uncanny’: Track-by-Track

‘Uncanny’ (1): ‘Just a Ghost’ & ‘Uncanny”

The first track, ‘Just a Ghost’ builds with a slow deliberate guitar melody, setting the tone for the rest of the EP. The song’s lyrics feel like a liberating rebuttal against those unsettling negativity. Some of these voices are familiar. “…I sense the people I haven’t spoken to in years…”.

The song takes power away from these negative familiars,  reducing them to ghosts. Forms that only hold space, but pose no threat. “…You’re just a ghost…”.

There’s something empowering about that message that carries itself through the EP.

‘Uncanny’, the titular track, meditates on the familiar feelings that seem linked to growth. Dark guitars accompany lyrics that describe familair spaces that seem different, though they haven’t changed. These moments seem to  highlight the cost of time, regardless how much you grow and how far you’ve gone on your journey.

“…As time goes by I try to lie to myself, pretend it’s not uncanny…”.

‘Uncanny’ (2): ‘Time Traveller’ & ‘Fickle Heart’

‘Time Traveller’ tells this compelling story about a narrator who knows their time with someone is limited. It reflects on that delicate tension between a romantic love that feels infinite and the time the limited time they have with their love.

Though it tells an almost wacky time-travel story with a bittersweet ending, the emotions the song elicits feel familiar enough that the heartache hurts tenfold.

The final song on the ‘Uncanny’ EP, ‘Fickle Heart’  comes from an empowered place. The narrator here is sure of themselves and what they want. They wouldn’t want someone who’s unsure of what they want to mess with that balance.

‘Uncanny’ by Holly Havens is EP that takes us through moments of heartache that settle with familiarity that feels eerie. Our narrator seems to have grown out of these spaces they frequent, whether emotional or in the physical.

Those moments of recognition helps immerse the listener into this experience.
