“10-Piece”, by Nuggaet: Powerful grunge rock with a dash of humour!

Nuggaet is a high-energy rock duo driven by heavy riffs, pounding drums, and wild vocals, delivering raw, bite-sized tracks packed with humour, simplicity, and pure energy — and on their latest album, “10-Piece”, they present a confluence of their various influences, stirring into a melting pot of music — keep reading for my thoughts!

The 10-piece, as the name may suggest, album is, in reality, a 20-track album; side B of this album includes the instrumentals for the ten tracks that make up the main album. The first of these 10, “Waste My Time”, is an entertaining rock track that pivots on its straightforward lyrics, reserving the magic for the screaming, well-executed guitars and the tasteful chugged breakdowns that dot the song. With this explosion in energy from the second uno, there’s a foundation set to this album that hankers the listener towards more.

Segueing into the second track, “Nuggets (Not At McD)” presents an angrier punk rock sound that’s stated simply — the faster, more energetic rhythms lend themselves quite well to the aggression that Nuggaet is known for — that being said, the track finds itself rather well-executed. Read not into the lyrical themes, on a suggestion from the band themselves; the rest of the ensemble steals the show here — and how well they seem to wrap around the vocals. “Chicken nuggets make me happy”, the vocals scream, in hilarious a fashion as the guitars drive home the passion with which it’s said. Ah, yum.

“I Don’t Like Anything” — grunge rock in its roots, it uses the thrashy, garage rock sound to drive the sheer power of the track. With tasteful breakdowns and speedups as the band fancies, the presentation is witty and well-executed.

This theme on “10-Piece” continues rather eloquently throughout the album, reaching checkpoints like “Galactose Intolerant” — a track that reminds me of the track “Warriors Of The World United” with its steady chugged guitars. Hard rock is best how I describe the sound on offer here — and it’s delicious.

At this point, it seems prudent to report that the band does not take themselves too seriously with their slapstick humour that is evident in all of their tracks and the way that their lyrical themes — hilarious as they may be, however — are presented superbly well and lend themselves to a fluency in the sound that is worth much appreciation. The mixing and mastering on this album are also top touch with the kind of wide stereo image that one would expect out of a self-respecting well-executed record. The loudness is there, the dynamics are retained rather well and the mix manages to strike quite the balance between precision and balls-to-the-wall aggression.

All in all, ’10-Piece” represents the aggression of the 90s, and the grunge movement blended rather tastefully with a sprinkling of heavy metal, hard rock and experimental rock passages that are sure to keep you entertained from beginning to end. A five-course meal, this one, and one I loved every bit of. Check out the album here!
