Muscular is a project by Finnish keyboardist and pianist, Ilmari Aitoaho. Founded on Herbie Hancock’s jazz-funk headhunting, Parliament-Funkadelic’s vision through star-shaped sunglasses, Prince’s vision and groups like Franc Moody and Vulfpeck, Muscular is an eclectic project to say in the least. Ilmari is also a part of the rock-funk group, Tomi Salesvuo East Funk Attack, Motown-inspired band Punomo and indie-rock cult, Yournalist.
His latest track, Demons, really takes the Funk up. The beat isn’t completely dependent on drums, using various percussive instruments. I find that percussions really help keep the tempo and groove up. Demons is a relatively happy song with a fast-paced flow and electrofunk groove. The vocals on this track are so beautifully recorded and well-placed in the mix. I find that the song has a really upbeat rhythm that helps you work along to it. Muscular showcases his ability to compose a funky track. Moreover, Demons is one of those catchy songs that you’ll have ringing in your ear even after one listening. I really enjoy the representation in this track too. It feels like a modern take on Funk while not dismissing some classic elements.
The Electronic element is rich and adds a nice take on the Funk sound. I really enjoy the little sample that plays over and over again. Additionally, it will probably stick with you even after one listen to Demons. I find that the track has this uncanny ability to elevate your spirit as well. It’s a pretty empowering track too – fighting one’s demons is difficult. However, Muscular finds the right words to encourage you to get through it.
