“I’ll Stay”, by Monique Sherrell Brown: Blues-infused, well-executed pop

Monique Sherrell Brown brings her signature blend of blues and pop music to the fore in her latest single, “I’ll Stay”. With her wafty vocals and blues influences, keep reading for my thoughts on how this song fares!

The intro to the song is marked by this very jazzy, bluesy riff on the clean electric, which is joined by the keys and the vocals soon thereafter; and from the very first notes, there is this envelope of sweet warmth that overcomes you, bringing images of a warm fireplace by the seaside to your mind. Adding to the imagery is the series of sweet piano parts that persist throughout the song, joined on occasion by the Rhodes piano to top off the feel for this song.

The drumming remains well put together and tight for the most part, with great articulation and energy being exhibited in the percussion department, perfectly complementing the message of the song, and the melodic instruments play excellently with Monique’s sultry, potent voice. Her vocals reach into the lower registers just as easily as the higher ones, and the mids are where she really finds her tessitura– and the impact of that on “I’ll Stay” is quite resounding in its satisfaction.

The production ensemble carries the message of the song forward quite nicely, with the mix and master coming in to help, chipping in to make the energy of the song very cohesive and held together quite handsomely. There is just the perfect amount of crunch in the guitars, just the right amount of saturation to make it distinctive and stand out rathe excellently, and I loved that in my time listening to this song.
