Jimmy, better known by his stage name J4 is a multi-genre artist and music producer. Playing the guitar since an early age in 6th grade, he started producing beats in University. Although he loves experimenting with different genres, he has an inclination towards hip-hop and rap. Today, we take a look at his 2019 single, “ALD Freestyle“.
He has opened for renowned artists like Lil Uzi Vert and Jay Critch and also done some pop records with “So-called Studious”, a Newark-based multimedia group. He takes musical inspiration from his own life experiences, and from the sounds from some of his favourite artists’ records, like Kanye West, Travis Scott and Lil Wayne. “Lifestyle” was J4’s debut project, which was a 6-track EP released in 2018. After that, he released a few singles, and a 5-track EP titled “Relief” in 2019.
Decorated with lush, ethereal elements in the production, “ALD Freestyle” is about owning your identity through bold self-expression. The tasteful use of vocal tuning seems to draw inspiration from artists like Travis Scott, with structures seemingly inspired by the sound of some of Jaden Smith’s work. Despite that, the sound of this song has its own unique identity, standing at par with reputed mainstream records.
With a smooth flow throughout the song, J4 makes it an easy listen and grabs your attention till the very end of the song through his vibey melodies and impactful production. The duration of slightly above 2 minutes leaves you wanting to listen more, making you hit that repeat button!
