UNDERDOG TRANS GLOBAL AMNESIA

From Upbeat Anthems to Dreamlike Journeys: The Varied Flavors of Underdog’s Rock Album “Trans Global Amnesia”

Underdog, a Boston-based band formed in 2014 by Scott Ferguson and Bryn Carlson, delivers supersonic music with a blend of classic rock and roll. With Aram Heller on bass and Harry MacKenzie on drums, they’ve claimed the #1 Alternative band spot in Boston for over five years, ranking high nationally and globally on Reverbnation. Their music, drawing from alternative rock, garage, and psychedelic influences, creates a unique sonic experience. Underdog’s lyrics are personal, exploring themes of solo travel, young love, and the passage of time. Their commitment to fun and compelling music has established them as a prominent force in the Boston music scene.

Underdog band is back with their extensive album “Trans Global Amnesia,” featuring 12 songs.

The album kicks off with “You Told Me,” an upbeat garage rock track bursting with energetic riffs. Distorted guitars and pounding drums give the song a lively pulse as the vocals float atop the mix. The lyrics tell a tale of betrayal, with the narrator calling out the one they’re singing to. It will undoubtedly resonate with anyone who feels let down by someone whose actions haven’t matched what was promised. Through the buzzing instrumentation and driving rhythm, you get a sense of the narrator’s frustration over not getting what they expected based on past assurances.

“Helsinki Airport Blues” by Underdog was such a fun, peppy track with a wonderfully bouncy rhythm. The interplay between the electric guitar, bass, and drums gave the song an irresistibly buoyant bounce that instantly put a smile on my face. Those tight, infectious guitar riffs had me nodding my head along from the very first note. There was just something so joyously classic rock ‘n’ roll about the guitar work on this song. It effortlessly conjured images of bellbottoms and big hair as it evoked the best of rock’s freewheeling past.

“Summer Song” thoroughly lives up to its name with its bright, breezy sound. Light percussion, cheerful vocals, and guitar lines bathed in sunlight give the track an easygoing warmth. At its core, the song celebrates summer’s carefree pleasures – whether hanging at the beach or simply basking in each precious day – while also acknowledging the season’s fleeting nature.

“New World Raga” by Underdog stood out to me as a true gem in the album. Through sheer melodic expertise, the song transported me to culturally rich spaces across India, thanks to the amazing notes of sitar. The sitarline created a delicate beauty. Absolutely brilliant!

Underneath, the tabla provided the heartbeat – its complex rhythms executed flawlessly. Moments of electric guitar shone through, too, adding modern colors that didn’t distract from tradition. With my eyes closed, I became fully immersed in the musical conversations unfolding. Subtle bells rang out at peaks, their chime echoing in the spirit. Though without words, the composition spoke volumes, taking me across landscapes and memories through mastery of form.

“Rocket Baby” by Underdog instantly transports you back to the glorious era of upbeat rock n’ roll. From the opening notes, a feeling of joy washes over you as the bouncy guitar riffs and energetic drums take hold. Led by the powerhouse vocals, each element comes together like a well-oiled machine, driving the song forward at a breakneck pace. There isn’t a moment to breathe as one infectious section flows straight into the next. catchy melodies and hooks are sprinkled throughout, refusing to let your toes stay still.

“Louie and Marie” takes a more laidback approach compared to the band’s previous uptempo rockers. Though slower in pace, the track’s infectious groove still quietly works its way into your body. Before long, you’ll find yourself nodding along as the vocals and melodies wrap comfortably around you. There’s an intimacy to the performance that transports the listener right to the front row of a live show. The band navigates the ebbs and flows of the arrangement with practiced ease.

“Echo of a Dream” showcases the band’s psychedelic approach to widening their sonic pallet.  Colors burst before the mind’s sight as tunes twist and phase in the ethereal ambiance. The shimmering tones of an electric sitar emerge inside this soundscape, its crystalline notes lending an otherworldly flavor to the song along with those amazing beats.

“Munchausen By Proxy” brings an infectious surge of adrenalized energy from the very start. Tight, propulsive riffing locks in with explosively driving drums to create a compelling sense of urgency and intensity. Additionally, the vocals pour forth with unbridled fervor and command. It’s the type of anthemic, pull-no-punches rocker that’s impossible not to get swept up in.

“K-9” seems like a seamless continuation of the previous track but takes on a more psychedelic twist. The riffs undergo numerous variations, creating a trance-like state, while the beats work their magic to maintain a compelling pace.

“Mallus Maleficarum” is a high-octane, high-energy rock song. This haunting track features lyrics about a mysterious lady who appears in dreams, capturing attention with unseen twists& turns and dark aura.

“Regeneration” by Underdog starts slow with those amazing licks and beats, gradually building up with such amazing retro-sounding vocal work. As the song progresses, the energy becomes infectious. The lead guitar goes through such fun variations that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The album concludes with “Blow Your Face Off.” The lively breaks, energetic electric riffs, and infectious beats make it impossible to overlook. It truly left a lasting impression! The transition to a mellower aura halfway through the song stood out, adding another layer of brilliance. The melody was exceptionally well-crafted, and the resurgence of guitar licks later in the song was a stroke of genius.
