Energy Whores is an inventive collective based in New York, formed in a DIY basement studio by Carrie Schoenfeld (vocals, keys) and Attilio Valenti (guitar). Their sound creatively blends protest-folk roots, inspired by legends like Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs, with elements of electro-punk-pop and avant-garde synths. Critics have hailed them as an “electro-punk-pop band with hypnotic rhythms that highlight the sharpness of their lyrics,” and recognized their work as “avant-garde art rock.” Energy Whores crafts music that blends compelling social narratives into their rhythms, making their presence felt in the contemporary music scene.
Energy Whores are back with their vibrant new album, “Arsenal of Democracy.” The journey begins with “Hey Hey Hate!,” where shimmering synths and upbeat beats immediately set the tone for a lively atmosphere. Airy and atmospheric vocal work adds to the enjoyment, making this synth indie pop track a sure mood-lifter.
Next up is “Pretty Sparkly Things,” which starts with a slow build of shimmery synths and mid-tempo beats, gradually escalating into a head-bopping, toe-tapping anthem. This track is undeniably catchy and serves as a delightful earworm that you’ll find yourself humming long after it ends.

“Bunker Man” is where the album by Energy Whores takes an interesting turn, featuring synth-driven electronica that truly transports you to another dimension. The eerie vocal work and layers of synths create a haunting yet immersive experience. The song is anything but predictable, continuously shifting and evolving its eclectic soundscape, making it my favorite track on the album. I was genuinely mind-blown by the richness of this experience. The repetitive singing of “Stay Alive” reaches a cinematic peak that is flawlessly executed, elevating the emotional depth of the song.
Following this, “Two Minutes to Midnight” slows down completely and adopts a calmer approach. It’s a track I would listen to while relaxing my mind, perfect for swaying gently along. The breezy vocal work is so well done that it feels like a balm for the soul. This song is best enjoyed at home, alone, with neon lights illuminating the space, an ideal setting for its calming vibes.

“King Orange” closes this album by Energy Whores on a funky note. This track exudes a teasing and slightly sassy aura. As it builds into a carefree and celebratory climax, it genuinely blew my mind. However, it surprises listeners by ending with eerie laughter, leaving a lasting impression. It leaves you wondering what to expect, what to wonder. Such an unexpected and genius way to end the song and the album.
