Coma Beach - Passion/Bliss

Coma Beach Creates “Passion/Bliss” With Fiery Alt Punk EP

Coma Beach is a veteran punk rock/alternative rock act hailing from Würzburg, Germany. Active since 1993, the band has spent decades carving out a sound that’s raw, unrelenting, and dripping with literary depth. With influences from legends like the Sex Pistols, The Cure, and Joy Division, Coma Beach merges chaotic energy with lyrical themes inspired by Beckett, Shakespeare, and Douglas Adams. Their latest EP, Passion/Bliss, closes the Scapegoat Revisited series, a nod to their groundbreaking 1995 debut, The Scapegoat’s Agony. This five-track EP is pure punk grit with an alternative edge. It stays true to Coma Beach’s DNA: explosive energy, rough yet meaningful vocals, and a willingness to experiment with dynamics.

The opener, “Passion,” sets a moody stage with chorus-soaked rhythm guitars and builds up with a surprising string section, which to me felt that it was adding an unexpected elegance to the chaos. The wailing, guitar solo is a raw and emotive. In the second half, the pace picks up, and the rustic, almost spat-out vocal delivery becomes the track’s driving force, which makes it messy as well as mesmerizing.

“Bliss” shifts the tone to heavy alternative rock. The rhythm changes keep you guessing, with relentless drums that anchor the intensity. The rhythm guitars sound heavy here. Coma Beach nails a mix of grit and groove that makes this track a standout. The third track, “Astray (Fallen Angel),” is where things get really interesting. The snare-heavy drum sound packs a punch, adding a groovy rhythm feel. The dynamic shifts here hit hard. When the guitar solo bursts in, it’s lends an epic feel coupled with layered vocals. Here we enter an almost goth punk territory. Almost reminds me of some moody early Opeth pieces if it was punk than tech death metal.

“Nothing Right” throws you straight into old-school, fast-paced punk energy. Beginnings with a metallic basslines which almost remind me of Joy Division. The tempo is relentless, the energy is raw, and the guitar solo feels like it’s tearing through. This track is channeling pure rage and an old school punk sound. Closing the record, “The Final Door” is a short, fast-paced punk outro that leaves no room to breathe. It’s unapologetically in your face and wraps the EP up in with a burst of unfiltered adrenaline.

Passion/Bliss by Coma Beach is everything you’d want from punk, gritty, unpredictable, and bursting with a chaotic energy with some innovation. If you’re into heavy alt rock and punk that doesn’t shy away from the edge, this EP is well worth your time.
