‘America’ by Dave Clark is a poignant rock song about those seduced by the American Dream before seeing its reality. Masterful guitar playing and moving storytelling form the basis of this engaging tale, with a narrative that flits from perspective to perspective in each verse.
The song tells the story of a specific sort of every man who labours under the pretence while they’re actively taken advantage of in some way. Each line of the track reveals this truth, plain to see, in a way that feels simultaneously eye-opening yet not surprising.

‘America’: “The American Dream”
‘America’ is a simple song, led by a guitar, string and a building rhythm. Its lyrics are matter-of-fact and easy to follow, giving us a glimpse into a dreamer’s life. We see this person leave their life behind to chase the ‘American Dream’, a promise of a better life.
“…I came to America to find a life of my own…
…(Now) I got no hope in a cardboard home living on a forgotten side of the road…”.
The refrain of ‘America’ laments.
“…America, how could you do this to me?
What happened to that shining citadel inside?…”.
But we quickly flit to another perspective in the same vein, emotional, raw and honest. We see an honest labourer have his hand cut off literally, in a voice like the previous verse, solemn and matter-of-fact. “…I lost my hand on the way home…”.
“…I only tried to chase a dream…(but) there’s no coming back from here….”.
‘America’ by Dave Clark is a poignant, bittersweet track that flits through narratives that come with a message. Listeners are confronted with this heavy feeling that something is lost, the American Dream is helpless and long gone, and those who are seduced by it pay the price.
