Having a life on the screen since childhood, Miley Cyrus has come to terms with loving herself, her opportunities and presenting her genuine voice.
Having a country rock star father and being thrown into television as a child is way more challenging than it looks. We all know Miley Cyrus from her hit Disney TV show, living a double life as a high school student and a pop star. Flung into the world of entertainment, one could say the Cyrus name was born to entertain. And boy, did she.
With a period in the 2010s being relatively tumultuous, Miley Cyrus has been a darling. Especially for the target group her music was designed for. Young teenage girls, who wanted to be told it’s okay to be themselves. It was always okay, but seeing Miley grow up, you might have thought different. She had her phases too, you know.

Meet Miley Cyrus seems to be an album many won’t even recognise. This is Miley from her Hannah Montana, good girl pop vibes looking for love. When she made Bangerz just 5 years later, she had completely transitioned into adulthood. Her fans, the media-always wanted her to grow up quickly. When she did on her own terms, they scorned and mocked her. Cyrus is a reflection of a demanding music industry that outgrows a person as fashion. It hurts, and there are only some ways you can show it.

So when you listen to Something Beautiful from her latest album, you can truly hear transformation. Her powerful, raspy voice is able to deliver emotion, and the erratic pulse with which she is forced to sing sometimes. As I write this, there are reports of her being heckled at the Tribeca Film Festival. Artists are humans, not an entity–and that might become a delivery that is satirised, by Miley herself.

There are infusions of industrial pop and rock here. In the first single itself, Miley Cyrus goes rogue for the chorus, and returns to the sweetheart voice she is. Remind you of a double life? Great reflection of reality if you ask me.
80s Japanese pop is reflected by Cyrus in her next single. End of the World is a contrast in messages. A joyous single, with deeper darker messages. A true slice of how we all are living our lives, yet she wants to bank on the hope when many don’t. Miley is a musician with a message of understanding, herself, her fans and how people perceive themselves.

There are more mature singles–powerful and painful to hear sometimes. The world has treated a pop star as though she was property, and she finally channels it out. When? When so many others have already been able to shine a light on it. Her moody vocals have reality, heavier than the virtual moments she might be creating. Is she really creating any, or telling her story stronger than she ever has?
More to Lose is a song like this, where simple, stripped back instrumentals assert her message with brilliant, echoing production. She grew up with us, and yet sounds 20 years older. Whether a crime or the reason for this kind of music, we’ll leave that upto you.

The groovy Easy Lover is the funk break you might want for your week. Since Miley played a version of herself in Black Mirror, you won’t be able to look past it. Her voice is now truly hers, and she has been able to represent what she always wanted to. She doesn’t lead back to the easy machine created pop that used to be force-fed to her. This is her time for more reason than one, and she has made something beautiful.

With Brittany Howard and Naomi Campbell, Miley chooses the right cameos for the visual cassette she wants to create. Golden Burning Sun is as mellow as you’ll hear her, while still being so individually Miley. She might have never known what her artist persona is. It was drawn and given to her for so many years, she had to paint over it. And what a beautiful piece she has created for us all.
No song might capture her state of mind better than Reborn. While she is able to translate her other moods into entertainment, Miley Cyrus becomes her current self in this song, from the lyrics to the theme she is able to draw out.
She might have never known what her artist persona is. It was drawn and given to her for so many years, she had to paint over it.
It is a pop album that is perfect from her standards, for she drafted them for herself now. There are gaps that you might see in how different she is-but there is too much to admire here to complain. For your consideration, Miley’s best version:

Self professed metalhead, moderately well read. If the music has soul, it's whole to me. The fact that my bio could have ended on a rhyme and doesn't should tell you a lot about my personality.
