Erro return with another splendid album of indie pop rock experimentation with “Shadowland”

Erro might represent and revive a bygone era-but through indomitable soul. Their music has the traditional process of jamming and understanding the expression of a band. The female fronted band led by Nikki Stagel has brought a vision to the fore that all music must sound human. There is purpose behind this escapism that we’re experiencing today. With dense irony, using technology, let’s dive into a place not tainted by AI. Welcome, to Shadowland.

The graceful melodies of the opening song grace your ears. This song is not just your portal into this place, but also a rhythmic expression of how this band puts music together. This is what drew us to the band, bringing zany, interesting layers with directed-refreshing melodies. Erro are a representation of how a band can embrace the contemporary without compromising the process of making music together. There’s no way this didn’t feel rewarding.

Journey, place by place

Honey Bear Lane has an R&B like opening that might make it seem like a 70s soft rock number at times. Brilliant guitar tone on this one, guys. There’s so much to unpack in a song like this, swinging with a passion that might get you off guard pleasantly. I remember reviewing their previous album Strawberry Moon-leaving excited, knowing the spirit of the music never gets compromised. Glad to hear that the foundation has held strong no matter the experimentation.

When you get to The Watcher, you’re shown a fun number which has a familiar chord progression, yet spun the way only Erro can. I love how they give fundamental space for a song to be enjoyed, rather than cram it with melodies, no matter how talented and well versed they might be. The range is seen, from JMS to the opening dreamy Shadowland. Attention to detail will always leave you pleased, the band is able to capture a lost drive for tonal structure and how it affects the symphony put together.

Range, as an honest representation

The clever groove of Walls kept me locked in, bringing that passionate display with a synthwave touch. You would never expect that tone with the lead instrument, yet they make it work with that bold approach. Erro is carving their space in the indie sphere with a sound that will make them instantly recognisable. There is no wavelength where you’re left by an uncohesive, wildly avant-garde track. Music made, with passion and reason.

The to and fro between 80s and 70s tone, refreshed for our time and place is amazing. Erro have verses that turn into bars in songs like Dragonfly-taking flight with a whole new kind of approach. They give us poetry in motion, only because they truly desire to. There is no intrinsic reason or compulsion to give us something so rewarding and memorable. Internal purpose drove this, and all of Erro’s music. You can return any time, to Shadowland:

Self professed metalhead, moderately well read. If the music has soul, it's whole to me. The fact that my bio could have ended on a rhyme and doesn't should tell you a lot about my personality.
