Album Review: Ben Böhmer breathes life into electronic music with “Bloom”

A unique original sound, the piano’s vocal melodies shapes Bloom: a lesson on how to say more than words, with motifs but without words.

Ben Böhmer treated music as his muse. This might have been one of the core reasons why he just sounds very original. It isn’t the music he’s making or the emotions he is touching upon. Human conditions will remain universal. Choice of melodies, choosing not to learn the traditional format of piano music as well as an unquenchable desire to create, leads to this. This is his latest album, Bloom. You could see the petals take shape from early on.

From when he begins Martin, he treats the instrument as his singing partner. If there is a personification, it extends into the song’s name as well. As a dedication, he crafts it with simplicity, memorable motifs dancing above the name. The way he splices beats into the essence is incredible and very unique. The smooth lows imbibe themselves with an energy that might be humble, but is going to build any time. When he returns to his piano motifs, it feels like you were within the waves, of the ocean, of the sea-where he wanted you to be.

With Lykke Li, he creates Hiding-a song that displays a great contrast. It has the confidence to put together a wave of sound as ambience, while Lykke’s vocals appeal to you like an angel’s. The balance is pitch perfect, you can experience it all, with attention given to every part of what makes the song special. Ben Böhmer doesn’t let the beats just bleed in for percussion’s sake, he builds the songs character using them. It is almost like it a sublime element, on this Earth for just a moment. Before it passes, you have the special chance to experience it.

From his debut album Breathing, Ben Böhmer has maintained an authenticity to his recordings that many cannot. He isn’t pressured by a style, but more of the demanding feeling’s conversation with him. If there are words for it, he chooses to have the melodies find a family within. Some are beyond words, and the music does more than enough justice. Take Best Life as an example. The melody itself wanted the energy of an artist who can do justice to a catchy, memorable verse. Featuring JONAH, the song finds itself while finding you. Notes seem to belong to you, as ecstatic as a dessert before dinner. Shameful luxuries, to be obsessed over.

Songs like Memory Cassettes encapsulate a lot by doing relatively less. There is a recurring melody that brings you to the song. As layers get added, it is like vivid imagery completing itself in your sub-conscience. The care put into the instruments chosen, what it evokes and means to the listener is amazing. It is because it means something to Ben Böhmer as well.

When he collaborates with vocalists, I wonder if there is an idea behind the music in the first place. They seem to share an important symbiotic relationship, where one can’t exist without the flow of the other. Though instrumental tracks of these would be great, perhaps listening to someone who sounds like one of us retains the human element. Ben finds his musical partners in the things he uses to compose. He finds friends to breathe more life into them.

Faithless has some of my favourite melodics personally. It is a very uplifting, powerful track with great lyrics as well. Erin LeCount gives her characteristic vocals while doing justice to the minimal space that Ben Böhmer creates so well. As a producer and composer, Ben has found his space to explore, reside and create with no inhibitions. This is his parallel universe, and he enjoys the freedom.

Rust relies a little more on the beats, creating a supple, warm environment to dive into the sound. Ben takes the strength of each artist, and also tries using it as a challenge to make what is real. It is a testament to his own skill and style, something he has made signature from the previous album.

Begin Again was some of Ben’s most explorative work. Inspired by the club scene of Berlin and coming from rural Germany, he had something many composers in the scene didn’t. Perspective. This was the water he wanted to absorb, obsess over and create with. He used it as his life force, to create music that might be electronic, with the tools given. They could have never sounded more personal, and human.

Ben is currently on tour with this amazing new album and his creative skill will be on full display. Check out his album here and make sure you follow him on his socials to stay up to date with his beautiful music. From his garden, for you to bloom:

Self professed metalhead, moderately well read. If the music has soul, it's whole to me. The fact that my bio could have ended on a rhyme and doesn't should tell you a lot about my personality.
