One listen to Destiny Imani, and you can surely hear the depth in her music. The Los Angeles, California based musician was born and brought up through the guiding melodies of a music sheet. Now, she writes her own destiny (accurately) through how she studies and puts tunes into effect. Think of thoughtful, emotional execution in melody that actually matters. This EP is called Wishful Thinking.
A serene chord progression graces your ears, as you press play. Destiny knows her vocals are commanding, which is why the ambience has a soft impact. The spotlight glistens around the vocals, as the tune builds organically. A short song devoid of percussion, this is able to engage a certain emotive part of you extremely well. Strings and piano notes are the perfect combo to rest your attention on, as the track carries more gravity. Each line has a certain impact, and Destiny Imani makes sure that it’s transported in either the words or the aesthetic of the tune.

The next song in itself shows dynamic range from this musician. Blank Slate dives into the depths of the mind. Softer percussions are spaced out with minimal ambiences and aesthetics. It is crisp in its delivery, yet echoes with purpose and hope. I loved how the vocals still have the raw touch. They aren’t over processed and hidden into the back because the melodies are so good. The bass is like a metronome, rather than engulfing the whole single with it-executed with purpose.
Therapy is what you need to recede into. It is an encouraging, positive experience to breathe in. One of my favourite tracks in this EP, the light piano bounce and emotions come together seamlessly. Serene violin transitions and echoes come together effortlessly. This is poetry in motion, and Destiny Imani understands her theme as well as an author could. Rather than compress the track with several vocal lines, Destiny leaves the emotive instrumental part to imbibe. Tastefully done, while thoroughly understanding the genre extremely well.
Closing with Wishful Thinking, this EP reflects with a certain sheen. While delving into insecurities, flaws and scars-there is learning in long range with Destiny. Once again gentle, effective and weaving the aesthetic-she writes with inspiration. You’re made to feel a part of the experience, of the growth and movement. A genuine story that you will find heartwarming and expressive.
Young and still having that fire, there’s definitely more music from Destiny that will show you what songwriting looks like. From 2021, she’s put out music that in every way, AI will never be able to write. No masking elements, just learning and growing through evocative music. Self professed metalhead, moderately well read. If the music has soul, it's whole to me. The fact that my bio could have ended on a rhyme and doesn't should tell you a lot about my personality.
