Dave Lebental and Karma Train have released a legendary new album called ‘Stylus’. A rock song collection that will definitely scratch all the 70s piano rock itches that you may have. It is spirited, excited by memorable moments of retro features and nostalgic sound, creating an immersive listening experience. If you crave music that takes you back to artists like Queen, The Beatles, Billy Joel, and Rufus Wainwright, you’re sure to love this album. It’s dramatic, full of a festive flair with orchestral notes and an air of liveliness. So much to unpack! Let’s get into it!
‘Addition by Subtraction’ opens the album, a track that sets the mood and the energy for the rest of the listening experience. As far as first impressions go, the track delivers and then some. Made with groovy rock ‘n’ roll, playful piano blues, a flush of riffs, and soul lifts, the track has that southern flavour that hits home. The vocals have such a fluid quality to them, giving you glimpses from Elton John sometimes to Freddie Mercury and Billy Joel.

If you want more of this vocal spectrum, you should definitely dote on tracks like ‘Mulberry Drive’ and ‘I Can Always Count On You’. These tracks have such a feel-good vocal presence with free-ranging expression and stylistic ambiguity. There is still a country kick, but it’s nice and soft, blended into the atmosphere.
In ‘Changing The Way I Feel’ and ‘Mindy Please’, we see a remarkable blues spread. An atmosphere that is coarse and gritty with raw soul. There’s a lot of pronounced blues features. Guitar solos and gradients are messily stained with blues to produce that underground effect. ‘Hopium’ is a 70s classic rock-style song. It has that consistent rhythm, expressive vocal line and blended bluesy tones. Everything lifts into each other to form a cohesive sound and a spectacular atmosphere.
‘True Understanding’ has an exploratory rhythm. It is dotted and dashed with cymbals, beats, chords, and piano. It’s layered, cushioned, dry, and lively, all at the same time, splitting and converging. It’s a masterclass in complex rhythm design while also presenting with simplicity. Ending with ‘You Figure it Out’, the artist expands the rhythm. Weaving in reggae time stamps, chill trumpet punches, and a dragging groove, the song elongates. The vocals have that soulful twinge and a sentimental softness that highlights the reggae and soul influences.
Overall, the album is a potpourri of rock, soul and blues. It has that classic style, rustic make, and true production style. There are no modern stunts or shimmer. Just good old, old-school-styled, nostalgia-inducing rock music. Listen Now!
The track is available for streaming on popular sites like Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Amazon Music!
