The atmospheres that Ater synthesises are incomparable. The band, in all its years of composing and playing, has found a sound that exudes their name in shape and form. Ater means a dull black or a gloomy atmosphere. Their latest single is called Sleep, and it is your dose of hypnosis to a coma you revel in. Have a listen, in your own discretion.
Charge with purpose
From the opening notes of the song, I was reminded of French band Alcest and their earlier compositions. Ater don’t rush into sections like the verse and chorus. It’s how the notes are supposed to suspend in your reality and play with your idea of time. Rather than darker, harder-hitting numbers like Somber– this one shows the contrast that the band is able to harness so well. At the 0:38th second, you’re treated to a ceiling of distorted guitar falling on you. Naturally rhythmic, the chemistry from the band is palpable, and is that glimmer you see in shades of black.

The synth cloud that suspends over the song is also incredibly strong. It plays as the lead, supposing that is the unravelling thread you’re supposed to hold on to as you fall into sleep. The riffs are a yank at your spine, forcing you to experience an enveloping feeling of paralysis. You experience vocals with a reverb, almost like a welcoming into this ethereal space you cannot turn back from. After their contrasting single called “My Girlfriend’s Girlfriend,” this allows you to be an observer of the crystal orb.
Ater have levelled up their production and efforts significantly, choosing unique avenues of genres into their lamenting sound. It is a blend of djent with true melody, a display of well-detailed composition and foraying into new grounds. Beware, for these odd-timed metronomes might put you to sleep:

Self professed metalhead, moderately well read. If the music has soul, it's whole to me. The fact that my bio could have ended on a rhyme and doesn't should tell you a lot about my personality.
