Marcus Miller and Herbie Hancock Approves ‘Historic City’ Tangier to Host Jazz Day

Since 2011, International Jazz Day has been bringing together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz. Its roots, future and impact. For the 2024 edition, renowned bassist Marcus Miller saw Morocco’s Tangier an ideal choice for hosting the celebrations. During a press conference held on the eve of the festivities, Marcus highlighted the ‘historic’ city’s allure as an ideal venue for the event, located at the crossroads of Europe and Africa. UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Culture, Ernesto Ottone Ramírez admired the choice. He commented on the city’s special historical ties with jazz, of how Moroccan local music Gnawa has a fusion history with the music. Tangier has seen world renowned artists like Josephine Baker, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Mann and Archie Shepp perform in the past.

HM King Mohammed VI’s patronage was significant in organsing the event. Morocco’s Ministry of Culture also supported the event. Legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, a UNESCO Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue also expressed his delight in Tangier being chosen as the host city. He also discussed the significance of Tangier as an iconic center of jazz and fusion music culture.

Tangier: In celebration of Jazz Day – Global harmony and cultural fusion at The Palais des Arts et de la Culture, a symbol of Tangier’s modern architectural renaissance.

It is the first time the organnisers chose Africa for International Jazz Day. It reflects how Tangier is opening up the stage for a global audience. UNESCO and Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz organised the event in partnership with the Tangier municipality. A series of educational activities, concerts, and conferences exploring the intertwined legacies of jazz and Gnawa music continued till 30th of April.

The All-Star Global Concert was broadcast on April 30 via YouTube, Facebook, the United Nations and UNESCO to millions of viewers worldwide. Tangier reclaimed its positon as a vibrant city by celebrating International Jazz Day, bringing together diverse arts and cultures. Watch the concert from the link below.
