“Show Some Respect” – Tom Morello Speaks Up on Meg White’s Drumming Controversy That Took Twitter by Storm

Tom Morello reacts on Instagram

If you’re aware of the Meg White incident, then here’s an update for you: Tom Morello has inserted himself in the equation.

A few days back, Twitter witnessed a raging controversy when a writer named Lachlan Markay criticized her drumming. Ever since then, the post (since deleted) went viral, getting a sh*tload of backlash from fans and other musicians alike. Markay was called out for his misinformed criticism of White’s music. In his post, he wrote, “The tragedy of the White Stripes is how great they would’ve been with a half decent drummer, I’ve heard all the ‘but it’s a carefully crafted sound mannnn!’ takes. I’m sorry Meg White was terrible and no band is better for having shitty percussion.”

Ever since the post went viral, raging fans have spoken up to defend Meg White. Even musicians including ex-husband and bandmate Jack White, Portishead’s Geoff Barrow, and Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello. The artists took to their social media to address the issue. On March 15, Jack White posted a poem on his Instagram along with a photo with Meg. “To be born in another time, any era but our own would’ve been fine. 100 years from now, 1000 years from now, some other distant, different, time,” he wrote, “One without demons, cowards and vampires out for blood, one with the positive inspiration to foster what is good.”

Tom Morello sets fool Lachlan Markay straight

Yesterday, the RATM guitarist posted an appropriate response to the situation on his Instagram. He defended Meg White while appreciating the musician’s “Flavor, Fire & Flair”

He stated, “I hear there’s some controversy on this matter lately so let me set fools straight: #MegWhite is one of the greatest drummers in the history of rock n roll. It’s not even a debate. There are a HANDFUL of drummers EVER who are INSTANTLY recognizable rocking their MANY HIT SONGS with Flavor, Fire & Flair. She’s on that list, bruh. Does she do a lot a complicated tom tom fills? No, THANK GOD.”

“She has style and swag and personality and oomph and taste and awesomeness that’s off the charts and a vibe that’s untouchable by all you boring-ass skin beaters who think we care about your ‘tight’ syncopated para-diddles.” Tom Morello continued, “She is a FORCE and her records are forever step-stones on how to do it your own way while rocking the damn planet. @officialjackwhite knows too, so show some respect.”

Jack and Meg White founded the band in 1997, and it went on to become one of the most popular bands of the twenty-first century. In spite of Meg White’s frequent criticism of her drumming technique, White Stripes secured six Grammy Awards. Presently, they are gearing up for the reissued release of their critically acclaimed 2003 full-length record, Elephant, on March 31 to celebrate the album’s 20 years anniversary.

Post the backlash, Markay apologized in a series of tweets (also deleted):“I am sorry,” he wrote. “And to women in the music business generally, who I think are disproportionately subject to this sort of shit, I am sorry to have fed that as well. I’m really going to try to be more thoughtful in the future, both on here and off.”
