Sick Society test the waters of prog rock, their own way. A band that is creating a splash with their sound, they are on the cusp of something refreshing. Their latest single called Soul is the predecessor for all that they have to show, while forging their own path. We also have a conversation with the band for their single, and future projects.
There are certain depths of the conscience you choose to converse with in this single. Tell me about composing these lyrics.
So music wise this song has mixed emotions of loneliness and darkness also craving the feeling of hope and a bright start. Therefore, we were very precise and thoughtful when we penned down the lyrics and started composing the vocal lines. The lyrics of the song is an imaginary conversation of a helpless and paralysed man who can’t convey his feelings to the very person who he wants beside him. So initially the lyrics are an invitation to that person he wants, to come and experience the silence and loneliness which is all he’s left with. Later on the imaginary conversation leads to the unity of his soul with the soul of the person he wants beside him, which in fact gives the paralysed man joy and hope of continuing his life.
Genres to rock to
Within alt-rock, you are creating a niche which is Sick Society’s unique sound. What are the ingredients to this delectable cocktail?
We have always been a fan of grunge rock, new metal and jazz, but alt-rock has been our soul. So we always thought of mixing up a little from jazz, new metal and grunge rock to this new sound of alt-rock we are trying to depict. Our first EP “Weird Relay” was a combination of Jazz and Alt-Rock. Our first album “Ecstatic” again has a combination of alt-rock, grunge rock with jazzy outros. We shaped our sound to a unique combination of all these with 4 years of writing/composing music and releasing nearly 30 songs.
Tones make a huge impact with this band’s sound. It is the reflection of storytelling, letting time tell its tales through rewarding pockets of melodies. Though the gentle whisper leads us into the song, there is a resounding strength that is brimming. Production has made sure each member brings out their best, and it is highlighted in the bright, shimmering sound they create. There is a nuanced topic at hand, so the amalgam of tones promises to be a complicated one. Unique progressions and transitions bring a refreshing take on prog-rock, packed with zeal. It is comeuppance of a band that has thought about their ideals, mastered their lyrics and made some evolution in sound through their approach.
The band’s beginning
The inception of the band. Tell me about what brought the members together?
The inception of 4 musicians who thrive to never stop making the music they love resulted in Sick Society. Lead Guitarist Hari is from a background of new metal and rock, while the drummer Abin has a background of Math Rock, Indie and Jazz. The vocalist Kiran has always been a fan of Grunge Rock and Soul music, while Rhythm guitarist Akshay has been into rock n roll and alt-rock since childhood. The combination of all these styles and genres can be found in Sick Society resulting in a new and fresh Alt-Rock sound which each member of the band was pretty much looking forward to.
What is Sick Society leading towards genre wise. Are there going to be experimentations eventually, or there is a sound that you have concretised?
We were experimenting all along the process of making and releasing these 30 songs, which we have released from 2020-2024. It took us 4 years to shape our sound, and you’ll be able to hear the sound we have concretised in the song “Soul” which is set to release on this 28th.
The chorus is something you’ll feel like singing for the honest connect it brings. Sick Society are approaching a sub-genre with an imprint that will become theirs, and will be followed by legions of fans. It is an incredibly strong debut that they have put out, and it is worth the promise that the initial melody puts out.
Inspirations and future
Who would you say some of your musical inspirations are, especially some artists who wouldn’t be linked with the genre you play?
Audioslave , Alter Bridge, System of a Down, Rage Against the Machine and Goo Goo Dolls were our main inspirations to make this kind of music. Apart from them, we are also inspired by artists like Jacob Collier, Greta Van Fleet, Tom Misch, Steven Wilson and David Maxim.
What is next in line after Soul for Sick Society? Are there more singles lined up or is an EP on the way?
So after “Soul” we will be releasing an EP of 4 songs and after the EP, 3 other singles as well. We are already done with the writings of the next 7 songs, and production is all that’s left. The upcoming EP is named “Old School Freedom” and our soul purpose and idea of this EP is to bring back the genre Alt-Rock to its limelight because we were really disappointed when we saw that the genre Alt-Rock has not grown much since 2010s. So “Old School Freedom” is our loud message to the world to bring this genre back to its listeners.
You can check out the band’s release soon on the 28th of July, 2024. Sick Society will definitely have some more music to share, resonating their values and the push they promise to make to prog-rock.
