Interview – Mimi Satanista (Rage is a Ritual)

We recently interviewed the young and talented artist Mimi Satanista, on the release of her latest track ‘Rage is a Ritual’, this is what she said:

What was your inspiration behind creating the song ‘Rage is a Ritual’?

RAGE IS A RITUAL was born from everything I wasn’t allowed to express. After surviving psychosis in 2022 and suffering still 3 years later, I had all this emotion inside me- rage, grief, confusion – and nowhere safe to put it. So I turned it into sound.

It’s not just a song, it’s an exorcism. A protest. A release. It’s for everyone who’s ever been silenced, medicated or dismissed. I wanted to create something raw and messy and alive – something that doesn’t ask permission to exist.

For me, rage became a survival mechanism, and this track is the ritual that made it sacred.

2. What, according to you, is the purpose of music? How successful have you been in the pursuit of this purpose? Or do you believe in “art for art’s sake”?

To me, music is a vessel. It’s how we process things that are too big for words – grief, rage, trauma, healing. It’s a form of survival. A way to scream when no one’s listening, or whisper when screaming hurts too much.

I don’t think art needs a purpose for everyone, but for me personally, it’s never just “art for art’s sake.” It’s how I stay alive. It’s how I connect. And it’s how I help others feel seen in their messiest, most unfiltered selves.

In that sense, I’m still on the journey- but every time someone tells me that they felt heard through my chaos, I know I’m getting closer to that purpose.

3. How has your musical journey been so far? What has been your biggest learning?

My musical journey has been intense, messy and kind of magical. I started making music after my first episode of psychosis back in 2022, and since then, it’s become my way of processing pain, reclaiming power and connecting with others who’ve been through similar things.

My biggest learning so far? To stop asking for permission.

To stop worrying about whether something sounds “right” or palatable. The moment I embraced my rawness – the noise, the rage, the honesty – is when everything started falling into place.

4. What is your creative process like? Is it a thought-out, carefully structured process, or more like a spur-of-the-moment creation?

My creative process is completely unhinged- in the best way.

It’s rarely structured. Most of the time, it starts with a feeling I can’t sit with, so I turn it into sound. Sometimes I’ll write lyrics in a frenzy at 2am, sometimes I’ll build a beat and just scream into it and see what comes out.

I don’t try to force it into a perfect shape. I let the emotion lead, even if its ugly or loud or uncomfortable. That’s where the truth lives for me – in the mess.

When it flows, I’ll stay up for days, hyper-focused and possessed by the process. It feels more like channelling than creating

5. Who do you look up to as an artist? Are there any role models who have inspired you along the way and have kept you enthusiastic as an artist?

There are so many! I’ve always looked up to artists who aren’t afraid to be raw, weird or completely unpalatable to the mainstream. People like Zheani, ZAND, Delilah Bon, The Buttress, Banshee – They’re all powerful female and non-binary artists who really inspire me – they’re loud, emotional and totally unfiltered, and that gave me permission to be the same.

It’s not just about their sound, its about their energy. The way they confront trauma, power and identity – that’s what lit a fire in me. They made me feel like maybe I didn’t have to fit in anywhere to still be heard. That’s what keeps me going: the hope that someone out there might feel the same when they hear my music.
