Check out what Roscoe says about the EP, Silly Songs For Clever Girls.

Hello Roscoe! First of all, the latest EP, Silly Songs For Clever Girls, is an excellent set of songs. So, before we get into the EP, will you walk us through your musical influences?

Hey guys! Good to hear from you, and thank you for the kind words. Lately, I would say i’ve been feeling inspired and influenced by a mix of artists and bands, including Less Than Jake, Phantom Planet, the latest Green Day album, Biohazard, and even some Kid Cudi! But for this release in particular, i would say i drew a large influence from bands such as Weezer, Goldfinger, Gob, and some prog/classic rock sort of artists for the closing track, Riddle Girl.

The title of your EP, Silly Songs For Clever Girls, is quite catchy. Could you tell us more about how you came up with this unique concept and name?

The name “Silly Songs for Clever Girls“, alongide its artwork by trigrau_u, is a small reference and nod to the scene in Jurassic Park where the raptor is in the bushes and the line “clever girl” is said before it attacks. The artwork is a cute and girly rendition of the “philosoraptor” meme, creating stronger references to the scene. The title is quite self-explanatory I think, as the songs, in my opinion, are quite silly for the most part, especially lyrically in the first 3. They are also all love songs, so “for clever girls” is just to further reiterate that.

The overall composition and recording process of the FiveSidedDice’s, Silly Songs For Clever Girls.

The songs in your EP seem to incorporate a wide range of musical elements from different genres. So, is this EP a solo execution, or have other musicians contributed to it? If so, can you introduce them?

This release, and almost all of the work including writing, composing, producing, and recording from FiveSidedDice is a one-man riot, unless stated otherwise in the release! I have featured musicians and rappers before on previous releases, including Standard Jack, Tiago Vital, Lookie Banzi, Chester Summerton, Spaceboyza, Mike-B, and several others. I plan to have a handful of featuring artists in my upcoming releases later this year!

Now, coming to the overall production of the EP. It sounds amazing! Can you walk us through the recording process and your experience during the whole thing?

The EP was recorded at the small flat studio of FiveSidedRecords in Gqeberha. The tracking of each instrument was done individually, slowly building up the final product before mixing and mastering. It can be quite time consuming and frustrating when having to do everything independently and alone, but I also find that it’s easier to maintain a workflow when working alone, on your own schedule and relying only on yourself and your own work ethic. A lot of the files were unfortunately corrupted somehow when I brought them over on a flash drive and an HDD to England in May, and I had to use Teamviewer to access the storage on the studio PC back in South Africa to retrieve the files again. It was quite a mission, and a stressful one too.

A few more facts that you might want to know.

Besides their musical excellence, the songs are lyrically beautiful as well! So, are you the writer of them all? Would you like to share something about the songwriting process with us?

Thank you! Yes, i write all the lyrics myself, although sometimes I will take inspiration from little things that friends or family have said and later use that as a lyric, paraphrased in one way or another. Sometimes i start with the lyrics, as a poem of some sort. Other times I start with a melody in my head, or an instrumental that I’d have already composed. There’s no set method to the madness.

What’s next for FiveSidedDice?

My last question will be, what’s next? Is FiveSidedDice going to remain a project, or are you planning on moving ahead, making albums, and touring around the world with it as a band in the near future?

FiveSidedDice, to me, is a sort of “musical diary”, or a journal if that makes sense. If I look back on all the hundreds of songs I have recorded and released since 2012 or so, it tells a pretty accurate tale of most of my life. This passion project is a labour of love, and the creation of the songs are almost out of compulsion, not for any monetary gain or delusions of fame. However, a lot of songs that I produce as FiveSidedDice do become songs that I also perform with my bands, Undead Generation and Coastal Clones in South Africa.

I also have a new band in Northampton, England which just had its first rehearsal yesterday, and guess what song we started with? Lil Miss Melancholy! So yes, there are always plans to use the musical creations of FiveSidedDice in bigger ways, and to perform them live and bring them to life with full bands wherever I can. I hope to see people singing along to these songs in the crowd at some point, and i can’t wait to release more music! Thank you for the interview!
