Wolf Country brings her incredible, soulful songwriting with self-titled album

Wolf Country is a project that will resonate with you. Almost a poetry book of artist Alexa Economos from Columbus, she writes her debut album with great dexterity, feel and detail. There is maturity that is engraved deep within the understandings of these songs. A delightful, complex and overall dynamic album to experience. This is the self-titled debut called Wolf Country.

Opening with the gentle Good People, this is a melody that follows a simple chord progression, with Alexa’s vocals dominating the track. The ambient melodies bleed into the background, with harmonics being more gentle and angelic than a church choir. I loved how the tones only complement the melodies and her voice throughout the entire album. If Good People showcases Wolf Country as an experience through live instruments, there is a dark pop tinge to the next song. Inhuman is a deeper conversation, a commentary on society in itself through the musician’s eyes.

The progressions and background are minimal, barely existing till we reach the chorus. Percussions come in later, adding to the powerful textures of the song. It is kind of a contrast from the prior single, showing an ebb and flow like a flowing brook. Wolf in Country Linens is raw, yet polished in the way the song is composed. Little frills, licks and guitar accents really bring out the embedded emotive nature of the song. Her vocals sound heavenly throughout, Wolf Country depicting a groove that is as unified as her pulse.

Songwriter magic brought to life

By the time you reach Gemini, it is evident that this is one of the most well-rounded albums you’ll hear as a debut. I have heard countless songs through this year, yet no one has been able to captivate intentions this well. Wolf Country is brilliant as a debut collection-showing a thorough mastery of compositions, balance and the real use of minimal melodies. It is homogeneous enough to know this is from the same artist, come through a certain pool of thought. You’ll see layers emulsify in songs like Gravity, where she’s able to saturate incredible harmonies to the right degree.

I especially liked how the density increases towards the end of the album. There is an organic growth to the songs, while having no common templates. Wolf Country is songwriting mastery perfected through years, or Alexa is a genius-which her compositions clearly show. Everything sounds like one take, almost as though this is how her soul channels itself out externally every time. Lyrics are poetic, rich in imagery and have some of the best metaphors you’ll experience through music in the indie realm or otherwise.

Though the theme is very well woven through all the songs in this collection, I’m excited to see how this artist is going to progress with other music. Trained and blessed with a charismatic voice and songs that actually make you feel something, you’re stepping into lands that you’ll refuse to leave. Listen here:

Self professed metalhead, moderately well read. If the music has soul, it's whole to me. The fact that my bio could have ended on a rhyme and doesn't should tell you a lot about my personality.
