Raynald Grenier’s ‘Canon in E-Flat’: An Entrancing Classical Piece

Raynald Grenier’s ‘Canon in E-Flat’ is an entrancing, spell-binding composition that pulls the listener into its swell of longing.

The Piece

‘Canon in E-flat’ is an entrancing piece of music that evokes a romantic, almost longing mood. The strings repeat an enveloping melody, one stringed instrument following the next, gradually building this mood while sustaining it.

Each stringed instrument plays the melody a beat or two apart, creating a bed over which each instrument gets a moment to shine. This rotunda of sorts creates a solid through-line for the song, allowing its mood to sustain itself until the very end.

The sound’s relaxing pulse sways and melts into itself, allowing the listener to breath through the flow of the piece. This flow feels reminiscent of Felix Mendolsohn’s ‘The Wedding March’. Though in ‘Canon’ each note flows into the next rather than fitting together in a self-assured staccato rhythm.

‘Canon in E-Flat’ feels like a complete piece, with enough variation throughout that it keeps the listener engaged. The piece lulls it’s listener into trance almost. The instruments attempting to keep the piece at an equilibrium that isn’t invasive but inviting.

Raynald Grenier continues to entrance with his compositions with this spell-binding string quartet. ‘Canon in E-Flat’ is a piece that gradually builds into a sway. Which serves to move and engage the listener in a sure but gentle way.
