Upbeat, Funky and Melancholic: Me & Melancholy Explores Many Moods on “Illusio Veri”

Me & Melancholy is the sole musical vision of Swedish creator Peter Ehrling. Based in Stockholm, Peter’s project focuses on melancholic, synth-driven electronic music. Drawing from his previous band, Gränsen, and influences like Depeche Mode, New Order, and Camouflage, Peter aims to capture the spirit of 1980s/90s synthpop through his signature blend of vintage and modern electronic production. Retro keys and rhythms are given a fresh twist, resulting in an upbeat yet introspective listening experience across Me & Melancholy’s catalog.

Me & Melancholy has released a new album, “Illusio Veri,” featuring nine songs.

“My bucket of things to do before i die” is an instant party starter. From the very first beats and synths, my head was bobbing and feet were tapping. The retro vibes mixed with hardcore EDM is such a fun combo. And the vocals really seal the deal – so catchy and upbeat. Just puts a smile on your face, makes you want to dance the night away. Definitely the perfect song to get the energy pumping from the start of the album.

“Meant to be broken” by Me & Melancholy provided a nice change of pace. Don’t get me wrong, those pounding beats are still super engaging. But it takes things down a notch with the dreamier synth work. Gives your ears a chance to breathe after the high-octane opener. I can totally picture cruising down the highway with this one on, vibing out to the melodies floating through my car stereo.

“I can see you so clear in the night” caught me a bit off guard at first. The vibe takes a turn for the sinister compared to the past tracks. But man, once it picked up steam with that dark, pulsing techno groove, I was totally locked in. It’s cool to see the artist flex some different styles within the album. The murky ambiance still keeps it compelling throughout.

“Tears in the rain,” what a smoothly funky number. From the second that old-school bassline hit, my feet started moving of their own volition. Then you layer on those sweeping synth pads, and the party elevates. The retro-futuristic sound works so well like it was beamed straight out of a sci-fi flick.

“24 Hour Square” continues the upbeat spirit with an infectious synth-driven dancefloor groove. It’s the perfect song to let loose and move to the pulsing rhythms. The teasing synthwork and crisply produced beats effortlessly pull you in. I appreciate how the song takes an unexpected turn in its second half, elevating the energy even higher.

In contrast, “Clear blue skies” by Me & Melancholy spreads a warm, optimistic atmosphere. Where the prior track was all drive and motion, this one evokes a mellow yet pleasant vibe that’s easy to get lost in. The mood it cultivates is perfectly relaxing and feel-good.

“All the money in the world” draws you in with a mellow yet mysteriously rhythmic intro that piques your curiosity. Layered synth sounds and electronic textures build anticipation for when the beats and instrumentation come more into focus.

“The chosen few” picks up the energy with a bouncier backbeat while retaining a relaxed vibe. It’s an uptempo listen that maintains an easygoing atmosphere

“When the morning comes,” by Me & Melancholy continued in a more mellow vein. The vocals over gentle pads, keys, and percussion had such a soothing, easing effect. Really appreciate tracks like this that give your brain a break amongst all the pumped up energy. Nice way to close out the album on a more peaceful note after the diverse journey. A solid mix of vibes and moods throughout kept it interesting from start to finish.
