Leopoldo et Lacerda create a distinctive sound by merging electronic music, jazz, and world music. Their compositions feature complex rhythms, rich melodies, and mesmerizing tones, all expertly crafted by the duo. This results in a fresh, futuristic vibe with a genuine Portuguese urban essence.
Leopoldo et Lacerda, the dynamic duo, have released a new EP, “Eremita,” with 4 songs.
“Eremita,” the self-titled EP, kicks things off with a sprawling nine minutes! From the get-go, when the female voice softly utters, “Imagination has been called,” you know you’re in for a one-of-a-kind listening experience. Retro-tinged synths evolve throughout, funky and danceable yet enhanced with quirky sound effects. Occasional female vocals float above, gently prompting the imagination. Meanwhile, crisp percussion lays down an infectious beat to move to. As things progress, jazzy textures are layered in, taking the sound to new heights. It’s like the song is on a voyage of musical discovery and wants to take the listener along for the trip. Diverse elements blend seamlessly together, keeping you engaged for the extended run time.

“Transparente” ushers in an even more psychedelic phase of the journey. Leopoldo et Lacerda shape-shift between diverse vibes so seamlessly that you’re left wondering what’s coming next. Is it creepy? Cheerful? Some fusion of opposites? It’s best just to surrender to their musical magic as it evolves spontaneously yet cohesively. Certain sonic motifs and percussion patterns recur beneath the transformation, grounding you in a steady hypnotic trance. I found myself transported to some surreal party dimension, effortlessly swept up in the music’s flows and shifts. Memorable moments abound that truly must be experienced firsthand to appreciate. This shape-shifting interlude knows no boundaries, breaking conventions to immerse the listener in a blissfully bizarre headspace.

“Pressa” by Leopoldo et Lacerda takes a more chilled approach while retaining the EP’s surreal qualities. Repeating patterns of percussion and synth work lay down a foundation that’s meditative yet tripped out. As the track unfolds, deeper layers are unfolding like a blooming psychedelic flower – additional melodies, atmospheric washes in the background, sparse vocals floating through. It just gets richer and more nuanced as it flows on. Honestly, I’ve never heard anything quite like this – a single track that keeps revealing new facets, keeping me hooked from start to finish. Before I knew it, fourteen incredible minutes had passed in what felt like a blink. There’s an endless stream of surprises coating every micro-level detail, capturing my imagination on an almost subliminal level.
“Vislumbre” by Leopoldo et Lacerdabrings the EP to a feel-good conclusion. Breezier beats blend so well with atmospheric synths drifting gently in the ethereal backdrop. It has a warming, hopeful energy that brought a smile to my face and got my body swaying. While the synths create an introspective, dreamlike mood, the other elements radiate pure joy and upliftment. After the immersive experiences of the previous tracks, this lighter yet still interstellar tune offers a sense of warmth, optimism, and release. It’s the perfect way to ease out of the trippy headspace yet still feels satisfyingly melodic and danceable.
