The House Flies’ ‘Sweet Foxhound’ is an Alt Rock Continuum

The House Flies are an indie rock band with an atmospheric design. The band captures the theme with energy progressions and flow rather than with lyrical suggestions and vocal emotion. They are of course a part of it, but they are not dominant. Their latest release, ‘Sweet Foxhound’ is a great example of their style and sonic chemistry. Opening with glassy bass lines and a landing beatline, the song opens into many rooms of feeling. The vocals are dry and cryptic, just vapour floating around, carrying into the space as if in a daze. In the chorus, the chords and grooves grow more pronounced, looping into a motif flow and building on the energy. The melodic notes combined with the deep and resounding textures are reminiscent of early 2000s indie rock.

The idea is to cast the listener in a dazing, reflective swirl; making the song a cerebral place to be. Everything in the soundscape is creatively geared to maintain this energy, this soft hypnotic feeling. And it only breaks towards the bridge when a riff storm takes over. Even then, it doesn’t shatter, but only compresses the flows, and increases the frequency, making it into a crescendo, driving into a peak and crashing, exploding like a grand sugar rush.
