‘Pedestal’ by Magdalia is an Empowering Alternative/Indie Ballad

‘Pedestal’ by Magdalia is a heartfelt alternative/indie ballad that describes a sense of vulnerable disillusionment in its soundscape. Its lilting piano paired with the singer’s velvety tone gives the song an emotional, moving edge.

‘Pedestal’: Vulnerable and Minimal

The song’s lyrics describe someone who truly didn’t know the narrator, treating them in selfish and egotistical ways. A line in the song’s refrain captures this theme perfectly. “…you crossed a line when you put me on a pedestal, (but) I was scared of heights…”.

‘Pedestal’ is a song that recognises its pain with an almost cold sense of clarity and empowerment. The singer’s heartbreak is clear, as she looks back on this time to see that the heartbreak was only inevitable. “…Always find a way to blame somebody, this time it was me…”.

The empowerment in the track’s lines comes through in the song’s building mid-section. Guitars and bass accompany an almost soaring melody while the lyrics resolve not to fall for this person’s nonsense anymore. “…You don’t get your say, you can take back your apologies…”.

“…I don’t waste time on things I don’t need…”.

The piano and soft guitars on ‘Pedestal’ lend themselves to the song’s building resolve and sensitive emotionality. Magdalia’s soaring vocals give the song a subtle but moving theatricality that lends itself to the story that builds throughout the song’s run-time.

In its deepest and most sensitive moments, Magdalia’s ‘Pedestal’ captures snap-shots of a relationship built on lies and one person’s ego. The song’s lines empower the singer and their choice while keeping her pain and vulnerability at its narrative centre.

The song is a moving listen, that keeps its listener entranced and engaged throughout.
