‘India’ and it’s Indie/Indian Uniqueness

The song tells the story of someone who’s braving the unknown in his quest for self-discovery and exploration. The singer wants to find his footing. He hopes to do this by going to the place “…where my heart belongs…”. India, “…where my father grown…”.

The song takes instruments that sound almost characteristic of an “Indian sound”, the flute, and pairs this with an almost folk-like instrumentation. The instrumental also captures the sounds of a roaring crowd, not unlike ones you would hear in a cricket stadium. The mid-section also seems to sample a tribal chant deep in the mix.

The lyrics in ‘India’ ‘s refrain seem to take inspiration from ancient Indian poetry, in terms of how they use imagery from nature and one’s surroundings to evoke a mood. “…I wanna run with the buffalos…”.”…I wanna dance where the river flows…”. “…I wanna sing in the waterfall…”.

Something in the song’s instrumentation seems to capture a unique sense of ‘Indianess’, even as it incorporates horns and strings that aren’t necessarily Indian.

There’s an urge to reconnect with one’s roots in the song’s lyrics, and a sense of the fear that could be compelling this urge too. “…Call it fate, but I’m travelling on my own…”. “…Where’s my mother? Where’s my father?…”.

“…I’ve got to be brave forever and ever…”.

‘India’ by Parmy Dhillon is a song that tracks a coming-of-age. It’s soundscape and lyrics are rich with imagery and mood, and grapple with fear and the thought of moving forward. Moving on or growing up.

It’s an interesting an uplifting listen, that uses the space it creates wholly.
